Humidity pad doesn't work

I bought the Kenmore dehumifier 54501 3 months ago, always keeping it at 75%. A month ago the pad stopped working, so it sets at either ON or 35%. No matter which way I press the pad it doesn't increase the humidity setting. I life in the tropics, extreme humidity, so this is a problem. Any ideas what I can do to get it to higher humidity setting?

thanks much.

You've posted in DEhumidifier section.

Sounds like you have a Humidifier. Please post there.

Although why you want to add humidity to the tropics is beyond me.

SOURCE: 20% humidity reading

Hi, I just cleaned my dehumidifier and had the same problem as you. I used a spray water bottle and was not aware that the humidity sensor was being soaked. Very stupid of me!! Luckily I have two same dehumidifiers and used the other sensor to replace the one that I so stupidly ruined, and behold my machine worked again. Now I have to buy another sensor. To make sure we are talking about the same thing, my sensor is white, about 1 inch by 1/2 of an inch. It as 4 wires connected to it. To access it you remove the water tank, you will see 2 screws. Remove those, and pry the front panel loose. Be careful the top of the panel is held by two plastic hooks, they break easy. The sensor is located on the right side just above the radiator, under a produting oval lip which as foam around its rim. The wire colors are red black blue and yellow. Good luck Herman

SOURCE: Relative humidity setting changes

My guess is the unit knows it can't reach 35% humidity, bacause it's measuring the ambient humidity. Dehumidifiers usually can't drop the RH more than around 10%.

My guess is the RH in the room is around 75% when this happens.

Hi,
It could be a bad compressor, circuit board, or maybe even a sensor or dehumidistat...
Here is a tip about dehumidifiers2_bing.gif that run but do not extract water from the air..

My dehumidifier kenmore model 580.52650 is working fine but turn off and turn back on every three minutes it is this dangerous, any solutions ? THANKS.

I think the problem may be caused by the humidity extraction level you have the unit set on. (i.e. It's set to high). Lower the humidity extraction level to 35%. This will allow the unit to run longer and extract more humidity, before it either shuts off, because the humidity level has been reached or the bucket is full and needs to be emptied.

Don't forget, the air intake filter should be cleaned regularly.

Hope this helped you. Please let me know.

I have a Kenmore 54501 Dehumidifier. Just plugged it in today and it runs but no water is in tank. What could the problem be? It worked great last summer and was not plugged in all winter.

You may have the humidity extraction level set higher than the humidity level in the house. Lower the level to 32 to 35%. Also, remove and check the air intake filter for dirt or clogs. Clean if necessary.

Hope this helps you solve the problem.

Of our three 54501 Kenmore dehumidifiers, none produced water after two - three weeks. They run but no humidity is drawn out of the air.

Keep in mind, that a dehumidifier only draws humidity from the air, if the level of humidity is higher than what the controls are set on. For instance, if you have the dehumidifier set on 65 to 70%, that's a high level of humidity to maintain in a house. If you have it set for 35 or 45%, that's a low level of humidity to maintain in a house. Which, generally is what you want to maintain in the hot, humid summer months. I find it uncanny, that all 3 units are not collecting any water. So, it may simply be the case, that the humidity level on each unit is improperly set.

Also, a dirty air intake filter makes the unit strain to keep up and can't take in moisture as it should. So, if you haven't cleaned the filters on a regular basis, not is the time to do so. And while your at it, clean the cooling coils too.

The easiest and best way to test a dehumidifier at home, to see if it's working properly. Is to place it in the bathroom and turn the shower ON and don't operate the bathroom's exhaust fan. Set the humidity level low (45%), turn the unit ON and close the door when you leave. Wait 30 to 40 minutes and check the water collection bucket. If there's water in it, it's working as it should.

Hope this helped you to solve the problem. Please let me know.

I have a kenmore dehumidifier (about 2 years old), and i've found that after i turn the unit on and it is running for 2-3 minutes, it will then shut down even though no water has collected in the tray. any...

My first thought is that there's not enough moisture/humidity in the air, for the setting you have the humidifier set on. The higher the setting or percentage (i.e. 60%) means that the level you want to maintain. Which may be find in the cod winter months. In the Hot summer months, you want as low a level of humidity as possible (i.e. 45%).

My second thought is that the air intake filter and the coolant coils need cleaning, since it has been used in 2 years. It's just sat around gathering dust and spiders.

And finally, the collection bucket, may not be inserted properly and when the unit starts up the vibration dislodges the bucket just enough, so that it's not making contact with the safety switch. Sometimes when this happens, the Full light indicator will come ON, even if the bucket is empty.

Hope this helps you to start troubleshooting the problem. Please let me know.

What is the right temperature setting when the room has a lot of water?

You can't control the temperature setting but you can control the humidity level. I would start somewhere between 35 and 40%- making sure to empty the dehumidifier promptly when full. 40% humidity will prevent mold and mildew growth- and that musty smell- but keep the room from becoming too dry.

When you push the power button, the blower fan comes on. In a few minutes you should hear a second "click"--that is your compressor starting. Do you hear that second click?

The compressor is located in the rear bottom on the right side looking at the machine. After you press the start button and the blower fan comes on, bend over near the back of the unit and listen for the "click".
