PS3 not reading discs and blu-ray drive not spinning

Would anyone know what's going on with my PS3 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lGRrFgZZ2og)? I did a system update in order to play LBP. After that, I could feel my PS3 became very hot by touching its surface. Then my PS3 started to have problem reading any discs (blu-ray, dvd, cd, etc). I could insert any discs into the blu-ray drive without problem, but the laser seems not able to detect any of them, nor does the screen show any kind of pop-up. The PS3 just gives a seem-to-be "invalid disc" beeping sound whenever a disc is inserted. I opened it up and everything looks clean. I wonder if it is a problem to the blu-ray laser, or problem with the mainboard... Please help, thanks!

If there is no picture on the TV screen: Back to top

  • Check that the input mode of the TV is appropriate for the connector in use on the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system.
  • There may be a problem with the cable in use. Try using another cable that is compatible with the PLAYSTATION®3.
  • If the video output settings on the PLAYSTATION®3 do not match those of the cable or TV in use, there may be no picture. If the screen goes blank, turn off the system.
  • Then, with only the PLAYSTATION®3 and the TV connected, touch the system's power button for more than 5 seconds to turn the system back on. The video output settings will automatically be reset to the standard resolution.
If the DVD or Blu-ray Disc™ (BD) cannot be played, or the picture is distorted: Back to top
  • When outputting DVD content or PLAYSTATION®3 system format software in SD resolution, only discs recorded in the NTSC standard can be played.
  • If the PLAYSTATION®3 is connected to a VCR or a combination TV/VCR unit, copy protection encoding on some DVDs and BDs may cause image distortion, or may cause the image to become lighter or darker. In such cases, connect the system to the TV directly.
  • If the DVD or BD does not match the region code set in the PLAYSTATION®3, it cannot be played.
  • Some DVDs are preset with parental control restrictions. Enter the password that was set in "Security Settings" to temporarily increase the viewer age restriction level.
  • Some BDs are preset with parental control restrictions. Enter the password that was set in "Security Settings" to change the parental control level.
  • The BD may be disc-locked. Enter the password that was set when the disc was created.
if non of that works you need to contact Sony at

SOURCE: ps3 blu ray lens cleaning

What are you saying you screw up your $600 dollar console. OMFG i mean common man. Jeez luis. Well since you have your ps3 already open your ps3 system you should open again and extract cod4 out of your blue ray drive before you hook it up and all that. So take the game out connect the blue ray drive back put the system together and power it up. See if that works.

SOURCE: PS3 Won't Take Disc!

Hi, I think it was me who had helped you before. I will be glad to help again. Ok, first you have to tear apart your PS3 (just like when you cleaned it). Now looking at the rollers and "dogs" make sure that they are closed and not open all the way like when a disc is in it. Look at the flap on the top too make sure it opens and closes freely. Next, PLEASE BE CAREFUL!! Plug your PS3 in and try to hit the eject button, if it is reset and ready for a disc it will beep twice when you hit the eject button without a disc in it. Place the top back on the he DVD drive and try to insert a disc. At this point it should take it. If not then try hitting the eject again. Once the PS3 resets and takes and ejects discs again, then you can put it back together.

SOURCE: I have disc read problems.

I do hear that the controller card on that revision of PS3 can have failure issues... right now I'm waiting on a new bluray drive assembly for a CECHE01 because of, basically, the very same problem. This eBay seller(lives on the other side of the US from me) seems to know a good bit about these issues, and even provides his phone number for tech support. Search under his store for: CECHE01

How do you clean a blue ray eye on a ps3

Here is a great video showing you how to clean the lens.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nSYYmYXgVl0
Here is some more info if the youtube video isn't getting it done:

So your shiney black pearl stopped reading discs huh? Now you are wondering if you can fix it because A)You are out of warranty and don't wanna pay almost 200 bucks to have it fixed or B) You are under warranty but don't wanna be without your PS3 for almost a month or longer .... Maybe you casn fix it on your own, if the problem is simple enough.

Sometimes the PS3 won't read discs simply because the lens is dirty, to find out if thats the case insert a game or blu-ray disc ... take careful note of the disc's 'label' as you put it in ... once it doesn't read after 10-15 seconds eject it ... if the disc's label hasn't moved your blu-ray drive's 'motor' is broken. Best bet is to send back to Sony and pay em. Or take the PS3 apart and try to replace the whole blu-ray drive.

If you remove the disc and notice it has moved your lens is probably dirty. This you 'can' fix yourself. First give the PS3 a GOOD cleaning. Vacuum it, blast it with a can of compressed air, vacuum again. Try disc.

Didn't work? Try a lens cleaner kit.

Didn't work? Time to get your hands dirty ... open the PS3 up (at your own risk) and clean the laser manually with pure alcohol and a q-tip. (video tutorials are on youtube.com)

Disc read errors are our main problem. It isn't some full blown epidemic but IS becoming worse by the day. My reasoning for this problem is simple: The PS3 is a dust MAGNET. I'm betting 90% of the disc read errors are cause by dust and dirt and pet hair getting in the machine and making the lens dirty or causing actual failure of the drive motor itself.

I love the PS3 and wish it didn't fail for anyone, especially this month with great titles almost here, but it happens. Happened to me on April 1st and I found out my blu-ray drive motor failed. A dirty lens I woulda fixed on my own. We really need a good blu-ray cleaner kit to come on the market in all major retail stores.

On my ps3 80gb system, the disc never spins up. I don't have a problem replacing the part myself, but I don't know what part to order. can you help. Thanks! Mike

Hi there, the PS3 blu ray is a bit of a complex device. Basically the way it work is before the disc is even spun the laser reads and detects what kind of media is inserted into the PS3. As you are saying the disc is not spinning there are 2 possible causes for this.
1. The blu ray lens has gone and is unable to read blu ray discs, hence the disc does not spin as none is detected.
2. The actual motor that spins the disc has gone. This is a much more unlikely reason, the blu ray lens is a common problem on the PS3.

As a shot in the dark you could try a laser lens cleaner but make sure it is suitable for blu ray. If this does not work you are going to have to purchase a new blu ray drive. You can get them for around £70 on ebay but you need to make sure you get the right one. Check your PS3 model number and google it to find which drive you have.

Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa

PLAYS DVDS FINE BUT NOT ANY GAMES

I dealt with one such problem, it was an issue with the blu-ray drive itself, and the drive needed to be replaced.
If you're willing to go that route, I'd suggest disassembling the ps3

locate the model number of the blu-ray drive, and start scouring ebay for refurbished drives.
Prepare to spend 40-115 dollars.

This particular ebay seller will take the time to talk with you over the phone about which specific blu-ray drive you have and will need.

I don't know the seller, but I did purchase one drive from him about 7 weeks ago.

I hope things work out well for you.

Ps3 will not read discs

Hello,
When you put in a disc, listen for the disc to start spinning. If you do not hear that then the laser diode has blown out. You will have to get your Blu-Ray player serviced by a pro or Sony. Sony may fix it for free or replace your unit.. They know that the drives are failing. So call them first. If you know how to do it yourself, you will need part KES-400A if it is not spinning. If it's spinning and not reading the laser may be dusty or need replacement. The laser by it's self is part number is KES-400AAA. If you need any more information, please do not hesitate to hit my "Ask Me" button.

You can purchase the KES-400A replacement lense and replace it yourself by looking at some videos on youtube.

Your ps3 blu ray diode is burnt out.
