the knob may be broken or worn were it attaches to the switch.if you remove the knob and use a pair of pliers to turn the shaft to see if the modes change,if they do then you need to replace the knob and make sure the metal lock tang is with the new knob that securely holds the new one on the shaft.if not then the switch is bad.the rear of the knob should have a odd shape that fits the same shape of the shaft it attaches to.
The knobs are usually connected to a potentiometer; basically a variable resistor circuit with a long shaft that the knob attaches to. The knob could be secured to the shaft with a plastic grommet, which can be stripped. It could be attached by a small screw on the knob, and tightening that would fix it. Or, it's possible that the potentiometer itself broke, and would need to be replaced.
If the "pot" is broken, a repair shop should be able to fix it for less than $50. If you're handy with tools, you can take the 7100A apart; hopefully read the specs from the potentiometer; and buy a new one. Replacing it shouldn't take more than a few screwdrivers, some pliers, and a soldering iron...
the key is to dismantle the font ofthe knob assy( the small plastic center of knob pulls out) it also acts as a locking ring /clip to hold unto the new timer shaft
Assuming you still have the female part with the treads in tact, you can do what I did. I used a hose clamp, the kind used on radiators, but larger. First, take off the lock down knob, then put the hose clamp over the broken plastic housing and mark where the knob would screw through. Then remove the hose clamp, placing it on a sturdy surface and use a 5/16 drill bit to make a hole where the lock down know will pass through. Place the hose clamp over the plastic housing, insert the knob, tighten the hose clamp (but not so much that it restricts the tripod leg from moving) and you are done! I can send you pictures of the process and the final result. It saved me from buying a new tripod! I can be e-mailed at [email protected] if you have questions. -Spencer
You should be able to simply push the new knob right on the switch shaft. If part of the broken knob shaft is on the switch, remove it first before installing the new knob. If you see that the switch shaft is broken off, replace the switch as well.
Hope this helps.
