Hello,

I'd be happy to walk you through this repair. Unfortunately this is a very common problem with the Hoover SteamVacs.

Here's what you'll need to complete this repair:
- Hoover Turbine Assembly For Model F5866-900 Part # 43191001 or 90001354
- Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Flat Head Screwdriver

Step 1. Remove both the clean solution, and the dirty solution tanks from the machine, and press the handle release pedal so that the handle is laying down flat:

Step 2. With a flat head screwdriver, pry off the rotating brush speed indicator knob:

Step 3. Unscrew the silver screw that's at the very top of the see thru suction porhoover steam vac all terrain turbine gear assembly - 91c5d91.jpg dirty solution tank rests.

Step 4. Turn the SteamVac upside down so that the brushes are facing upwards. There are four clips that hold these brushes in place. You'll need to remove the brushes from the machine by squeezing the four tabs while pulling upwards at the same time. The picture actually only shows the two tabs on the right hhoover steam vac all terrain turbine gear assembly - 903753e.jpging squeezed, but the tabs on the left hand side are in the exact same location:

Step 5. Once you've removed the brush block from the machine, there are 4 screws on the bottom that need to be removed. hoover steam vac all terrain turbine gear assembly - 8f04e58.jpgwo silver screws on the very corner in place, you won't need to remove these. Remove the four screws that I've highlighted in red:

Step 6. Turn the machine back over right side up, so that the brushes are on the bottom. There are two clips that hold the top housing in place. Insert your flat head screwdriver in between the tohoover steam vac all terrain turbine gear assembly - 19c46e5.jpg housing in the rear of the machine close to the rear wheels, and pry upwards to unclip these clips on both the left and right sides, then remove the top motor housing from the machine.

Step 7. You'll now have complete access to the turbine. Remove the two silver screws in the front of the unit that hold the turbine in place, as well as remove the front hose from the turbine:

9f8ce8d.jpg
Step 8. Once you have removed the two screws you'll be able to lift the turbine up. There's a second hose in the rear of the turbine that you'll also need to remove before you can remove the turbine completely. After you've removed the hose, take the turbine out of the machine. You'll notice to the immediate left of the turbine other hoses that connect to a black circular part. This is actually the pump that sprays the water on the floor. If you ever have the problem where the clean water solution will not spray, it's a good possibility that this part needs to be replaced.

Simply install the new turbine, reattached the hoses and two front screws. When you're putting the top motor housing back on the unit, make sure that the brush speed selector knob that's on the right side of the turbine fits through the **** in the top motor housing. Also before tighting the two screws that that hold the top housing in in front of the brushes, there's two clips. You'll need to snap the top motor housing behind these two clips. Simply push front of the motor housing until you hear it snap into place.

That's about it. If you have any trouble with this repair, please don't hesitate to use the Clarification request form here on Fixya. Replace a turbine and gear assembly on a hoover F5914-900

Nine years later, and this page was a godsend! However, the price of a new turbine simply wasn't cost effective, so I opened up the turbine and found a rusted, seized bearing. Don't let the idea of fixing the turbine scare you... it's not difficult at all if you know how to use a Phillips screwdriver. And if it's not working now, you aren't going to make things worse.

A bit of Internet searching will show you how to open the turbine, but even without a set of instructions, don't be afraid to take out those four screws. I was fortunate: I pulled that rusted bearing and went to Akron (Ohio) Bearing and showed them the old one. In 30 seconds the guy behind the counter handed me the identical bearing. I cleaned up all the plastic gears in the turbine, regreased them, and had it back together in no time. You don't live in Akron, Ohio?? - Just look for a bearing business in a city near you.

Hoover steam carpet cleaner - turbine needed for F7458-900

Once you get the turbine out, open it up by unlatching the three latches and unscrewing two screws. Pull the gears out and WD40 everything. Let it sit for a bit and start turning the solver gear at the back with a pair of pliers. Once it is loose, put all the gears back together and return everything to it's place. FIXED! without buying a new turbine....

How do we get at the drive belt? The cover seems to be sealed.

There is no belt in a Hoover SteamVac. The brushes are turned by an air driven turbine. If the brushes are not turning, it is usually because the turbine has seized up and may need replacement. Insert a screwdriver into the square hole that the pin on the brush assembly normally fits into and see if it turns. If it doesn't, you will need a new turbine.

Hoover steam vac F7427-900, brushes stopped

Yes, But very carefully. I have cleaned and replaced the bearings on many of these items. I found the bearing to be available online. There is also a measure of prevention to install a new gasket when re-installing the turbine.

There are 6 screws under the bottom to remove the hood and nozzle. two snaps on top at the back to release.
Two long screws under the botton center for the turbine and 2 more short ones on top at the nozzle body. disconnect the hoses and remove trubine. If you need more assistance please reply to this post.

New Hoover Steam Vac's brushes do not spin

The brushes are turning by an air driven turbine. The turbine has a pivot bushing made of steel inside of it that gets rusty because of the water that is running through it. The turbine will have to be replaced. You can find a genuine hoover replacement part by following the link below.

My Hoover steam vac dual v's brushes will not spin and the square that the peg goes into wont spin either. There is suction but it is making a loud noise.

sometime when the brush is not turning their are less resistance to the motor, so it will turn allot faster than normal. The turbine gear assembly which connected to the brush assembly probably broken, all the gears are made out plastic and they can easily break, strip or worned over period of usage. the assembly cost around 20 bucks and it not that hard to replace and it not that hard to take it apart, just remember what goes where. I wonldn't surprise when taking the vacuum apart as you observed closely and inspect the brush unit and the turbine gear assembly you might easily spot what broken and need replacing. hope that help some; and if you don't want to fiddle with it, your local vacuum repair guy can probably do it for less than 40 bucks. you can go on-line vacuum parts.com

Hoover terrain steam cleaner, brushes wont spin

The primary problem is that the turbine is seized. One way to verify this is to try to manually move the brushes by hand (with it off, unplugged). If not then your problem is with the turbine. This usually requires professional service. I would recommend to take it to a trusted vac shop which is familiar with these cleaners. or go to the hoover web site to locate a hoover dealer near you.

Hoover steam vac, brushes won't rotate, have cleaned filter by brushes, removed brushes and they rotate okay when off steam vac, tried to ajust level for carpet cleaning and brushes still don't move

Check to see if the shaft on the brush block hasn't broken off. Otherwise it is the turbine that drives the brushes and is either clogged up inside or needs to be replaced.
