Mike Walsan - another FIXYA spammer - where do they come from?

I have been attempting to use an external hard drive. When plugged in, I get a Windows Code 43 error. I have tried to update the driver and have also disabled and enabled the driver. It keeps on asking me to format but this can't be done because of the files that I require. The software for the drive does not install. I can't do a check disk for errors cos it can't be found by the OS. Point me in the direction of up Thank you Ian Cooper

SOURCE: i cannot reformat my pc windows xp,there's an error

If you are getting an error during installation its not good :(

Its prob either yor ram or hard drive faulty. Download memtest and test ram 1st as thats the most likely cause. Check that optimised defaults are loaded in bios also.

Disable the SATA option under advance options in BIOS. That should work and it will also allow you to install/reinstall Win XP.

It's very easy. You can switch SATA mode from AHCI to IDE (in Bios) and install XP, or leave AHCI mode, with 'nLite' integrate AHCI drivers into XP installatin files, burn and install... Drivers are not problem, just search in google, even ePower tools are working.

I have a Memorex Ultra Drive connected via USB to a Windows XP machine. It shows up in My Computer as a folder but then disappears again. It does this repeatedly. The drive is formated as a FAT32. How...

Hi,

As you have described that your Memorex Ultra Traveldrive re-appears repeatedly, indicates that the communication between your computer and your external hard drive is intermittent. The FAT32 format does not produce these types of issues. What we can do first is identify what causes the problem.

Assuming that the hard drive in your Memorex Ultra Traveldrive is in good shape:

Troubleshooting Method #1. Try connecting your Memorex Ultra Traveldrive into another USB port. If the problem persists, use another USB cable for your external hard drive. If the problem still persists, you will have to replace the external casing of your external hard drive. If your external hard drive works with the other USB port perfectly, most likely, the USB port where you originally plug into of your Windows XP machine needs to be checked. That USB port might need some repairing.

Troubleshooting Method #2. Try connecting the external hard drive into another computer and perform the same troubleshooting as Method #1. If your external hard drive works with other computers perfectly, most likely, the USB port where you originally plug into of your Windows XP machine needs to be checked. The USB port might need some repairing.

If the problem only occurs with your Windows XP machine, assuming all USB ports are in good shape, your Windows XP needs to be checked for some software issues.

I hope this works for you. Kindly reply/comment for further assistance. Good Luck!

When plugged into my computer, it acknowledges that it's been plugged in, however when i go to my computer to access my files, the folder doesn't show up.

Nalon:
Assuming that you're using Windows:
Assign a drive letter for the External drive.

  • Right Click on My Computer
  • Scroll to Manage
  • Select Disk Management
  • Locate the External drive in the lower bottom Right corner, Right Click, Select Assign Drive Letter. Ok/Close

Open up My Computer, and you should see your External drive with your new drive letter assigned to it.

REQUIRE WINDOWS 7 DRIVER FOR IOMEGA SILVER SERIES 250GB EXTERNAL HARD DISC DRIVE. THANK YOU

The external hard-drive is "plug-and-play", and Windows XP/Vista/7 all support "plug-and-play".
Thus, it should automatically be detected by Windows.

So, what's your "real" problem? Symptoms? Error-messages? What happens? What does not happen?

Most like the issue is that the drive letter that your external drive wants is already assigned to another device. The link below will help you change the drive letter.

There is a couple of things that could be going on. The first thing to check is that the drive did not get bumped off its drive letter by another device. If that is the case you just the to assign it a new one. The link below will help you do this.

The other issue is the drive may have gotten disconnected improperly. I had the same problem with one of my drive on my XP system as well. It partly has something to do with the USB controller to my understanding. Alot of times if you plug it into another computer it will detect it and ask to run a scan to repair the drive. After this you should be able to access the drive on your XP system again. Note I have the best resolutes when I plugged the drive into my Vista system. So I would recommend trying to plug it into a Windows Vista or 7 computer to attempt the repair.

Let me know if you have any more problems or questions.

Maxtor external back

Hi,
plug in your external drive, and note it,s letter ( assigned device name ) i.e F/G/H et,c.
open your c:/ drive. highlight which items you want to copy over.
left click to highlight. then right click/Options/scroll Down Send to DriveF/G/H
And transfer, this should transfer what you want from 1 drive to another. But Don,t try to copy Windows. you.ll have errors as some of the sys files, will be in use whilst transfering.
