I wish I had a solution... I'm in the exact same situation. I put in new batteries, and all I get is a faint reading of gibberish from the LCD screen, and that's it. I've tried following the instructions, but I can't set the time in the LCD clock, since it's unreadable, and almost completely gone. Seththomas.com has a web page indicating that "they will be back with info", but no support or FAQ pages. Disappointing... I have three of these clocks, and they are all behaving the same way.
Had problem with seth thomas at work, took out the old lithium 3 volt battery and replaced it, but the lcd did not display anything. I put Lithium AA batteries in also but they didn't work either. I kept messing with the clip that holds the 3 volt battery in place I actually bent it towards the center of the hole and put in the battery and it worked! It wouldn't change the time with the AA Lithium batteries so I changed them to AA alkaline instead and it worked fine, it reset itself to the correct time.
Same issue.
After pulling all of the batteries from the unit, I used a variable power supply set at 4v to connect across the coin cell battery terminals. The display came on. I placed all the same batteries in the unit, and it is now working fine.
Thanks for the solution! 4V jump start was all it needed (and the new cells).

Place your Seth Thomas atomic clock face-down on a table or desk and locate a series of buttons labeled "PST," "MST," "CST" and "EST" on the back of the clock. Press the appropriate button to set the time zone.
Turn your attention to the small lithium battery-powered digital clock display on the back of your clock. With the correct time zone set, the digital display should accurately reflect the current local time.
Locate the AA battery compartment on the back of your clock. Put two new AA batteries into your clock's battery compartment.
Set the "Mode" switch on the back of your Seth Thomas atomic clock to "Run." Wait for it to adjust to the correct time. The automatic time-adjustment process can take up to 45 minutes, but is usually completed much sooner.

how do i changed lithium battery
Remove the little screw on the tab off the circular plate. Then you'll have to gently pry the old cell out with a small tool.
BTW, 'Autoset' here does not denote a 'radio controlled' clock.
