My cable release is not working. It triggers the auto focus but will not take a picture.

may be the snap button is not working, apply some contact cleaner around the button press it an release several times, it will work.

Most camera's, and the Olympus to work the same with auto focus. You place the AF target o the place you want to focus on. (the part that should be in focus in your picture) then press the shutter release button half and wait tip the AF conformation mark lighter up on the view finder. (the little round in on the bottom left) Then frame the picture as you want it shot and press the button complete.
I'm not sure your lens has a AF / MF switch, but that should be on AF all the time.
When you use non AF lenses, your cmarea can't focus automatically.
It should work fine with the kit lens. (lens that was originally delivered with the body)

The trigger button is what controls the autofocus. Make sure the camera is set for AF not MF. That will also make the cmaera not focus.

No good working auto focus can have many causes.
Like the camera is in Macro mode, or manual focus. The best thing to try, is to switch your camera to the auto mode. The camera logo on your mode dial. And then shoot some pictures. There should be enough light and contrast in the frame, on the place you want the camera to focus on. Sometimes you have to chose an object, with enough details and contrast, on the same distance as the object you want to take a picture of. Then press the shutter half way, till the camera is in focus. the indicator lamp next to the mode dial glows green. Then frame the picture like you want it taken end only than press the shutter completely.
If the camera does focus correct in the auto mode, then you can check, why it did not focus before.
Check page 19 of the manual, to see how to use the shutter release button, for correct focus.

many cameras have a slow shutter release .. when you push the button you expect it to take a picture right away .. but the camera has to first adjust for focus and determine how much light is or will be available then set itself up .. this takes time but some newer cameras do it all very quickly .. one way to get around this is to first hold the shutter button down half way .. do this early just before your subjects are where you want them .. the camera will auto focus and set itself up .. keep the trigger in that half way position until the subject is in place .. now when you push the trigger the rest of the way down, there is very little lag ... make sure that you focus on something close to where your subject will be when they are in position .. .. another speed up trick is, if your camera has manual focus .. preset the focus for where you want it and that saves the time it takes to auto focus .. there are several digital camera reviews on the interent ..they will tell you how much shutter lag you can expect for different cameras .. that can be a great help when you are ready for a new camera or want to see where your present camera performs ..

Be sure you are on auto. Pressing the shutter release down half way causes the camera to focus. This needs to happen to get a clear picture. Be sure you have adequite light or the auto focus will not work. You might need to set your flash to auto as well . Them by pressing the shutter release the rest of the way down, you will get a picture. But gain, you need to allow it to focus first, then take the photo.

There was a recall on the N55 due to auto focus problems. You can do a google search or nikon.com email the support team and they will send you the paper. This is what I did, I wasn't charged since I had the correct papers. I, however, used one roll of film and my focus went out again! Mine doesn't even work on manual... If you want to try that maybe you will hae better luck than me. GOOD LUCK!

I had the same problem. My issue was with all my lenses. I solved it by going to the menu and selecting the custom setting menu (pencil icon). Then from the right menu select the AE-L/AF-L and press OK. Then make sure it is set on AE/AF Lock. Presto...all my lenses worked on auto-focus.

My first suggestion is to send it back if it is under warranty.

The grease probably got so thick, from the cold, that it caused too much resistance for the auto-focusing mechanism. You probably have damaged the focusing mechanism in the lens. You cannot repair this, yourself. I don't know how cold is too cold but it really shouldn't have done that.... Tamron makes cheap lenses. Try and exchange it for at least a Sigma.
