I get the same problem (4 flashing red lights).
I done some internet troubleshooting and narrowed it down to an overheated power circuit card/fan issue.

It turns out one of the fans is failing and will not rotate at the appropriate speed to cool the power circuit card, this will kick out the 4 flashing lights from the diagnostics.

In lieu of replacing the fans I have a temporary solution:
For my TV (kdsr50xbr1) the fan in question is located on the far left side (facing the rear). You will see a grill on the back of the TV showing you where the fan is located.

First, get a can of compressed air and blow it into every fan. This will clear away a lot of dust and help the fans move easier.
There is one blower type fan located inside the TV, remove the back panel and look for a tall yellow circuit card just to the left off the center of the TV. Behind that card is a blower (stands upright looks like a tube). Blow air into that blower, you will see a lot of dust come through the duct and out where the large fan in the center is located.
Put everything back together. and provided the fans aren't too far gone the TV should be working again.

Also, if the issue comes back, try this:
When you turn on the TV, shoot a short squirt of compressed air into the fan (Far left facing the rear). This will give it a kick start and bring it up to speed.

It is important to note that the compressed air cans do contain a liquid and as such are not compatible with electronics when they are plugged in. Try your hardest to keep the can upright and not allow the liquid to squirt out where it shouldn't. If it does it will evaporate in a few seconds.

Ok, relatively long post, to summarize:

1. Open back of TV, blow compressed air into every fan to clean them.
2. Blow air into whichever fan is causing problem if it happens again.
3. Keep the can upright if the TV is still plugged in. Don't sue me if you fry your TV.
4. If this doesn't work (has for me) replace fans

I just took that 120mm fan apart and cleaned it... Now it has been working fine for the past three months.

This is a strange problem. I also met this problem. I thought the power board had a problem, so I bought a power board at abctay.com, but the problem was still. How did your problem be solved?

How to FIX

Televisions have protection circuits which prevent full power-on if a fault is detected in a high voltage/high current circuit such as the backlight inverter.

Some googling on 'Sony Blink Codes' found that 4 blinks is 'backlight failure'. A common failure in LCD displays is the backlight inverter board which is a transformer similar in function to a fluorescent light ballast, as the backlights are fluorescent lamps.

If the screen color is getting pinkish/reddish, that's a sign that one or more of the lamps themselves are going bad.

Since multiple lamps are connected to (typically) two inverter boards (a primary and secondary board), I am fairly certain that the blink code refers to a failed inverter board and not a failed lamp.

I have the 50" SXRD XBR1 grand Wega; This has been a great set for 3+ yrs. A flashing red light promted me to replace my original buld (this site). I now still have a flashing red "power" light, shuts off...

Its the fan that cools the bulb. Try turning on the tv and look at the fan to the rear of the bulb. If the fan is not spinning that is your prblem. The tv has a safety switch that will cut off the tv if the bulb gets too hot. I was able to tap my fan with a pencil and get it spinning, but that is just a temperary fix. After a while, you will find the fan will stop working all together and it will need to be replaced.

Flashing red light

I think this sounds like my problem (need to replace the projector lamp). However, when I hit the "on" button, my SXRD 50" blinks green for about a minute then starts blinking red. Can you confirm the bulb solution? I was very pleased with this sight when my fan malfunctioned. I got the fan in a matter of day's from Sony and it fixed that problem.
