Full Memory My imac says my startup disc is full and my mail directory is full. Only I don't think it should be. I would say I have the usual amount of applications, about 6,000 pictures and 5,000 songs. I read somewhere that a mac should hold about 200,000 pictures. But my 150Gig is full. How can I find out what is stealing all my memory. And is there some regular maintenance that needs to be done? After a repair once the guy told me to do something on a regular basis and I didn't write it down. It was to keep your computer "clean" and un-jumbled in addition to the start up cleaning.

How to clear scan data

Your machine will show 100% and that is correct. It doesn't mean memory full, but rather the amount of memory that is still available. Once you scan a document you will see the memory drop down to 99% or even lower depending on the size of the scan. If you don't see this happening than you are not scanning. Other than that your scan will either go to a folder on your PC or straight to your email. All you need to do is locate the folder it saves your scan in (usually created in your C: drive) or check your email folders including your Spam/Junk mail folders.

There is a limit to the number of files you can copy to
the root directory of a memory card. The simple solution is to create folders for the photos...
then you can take full advantage of the memory capacity.

to make a folder right click in the drive select new folder you should name it

Wont startup.flashing ?

Hi. The Flashing ? means that the mac cannot find a valid start-up drive. Sometimes this can mean a failed Hard-drive but more commonly it is a sign of directory corruption.
It's quite possible with an iMac of this age that you could have a failed Hard-drive. However, if you can locate a copy of DiskWarrior you can fix a corrupt directory.

Digital cameras that come with internal memory usually have a very small amount of storage capacity (usually 32 or 64MB). I'm not sure why the manufacturers even bother with internal storage when you can get memory cards that have much more capacity. You need to either download the photos you've taken to your PC and then delete the photos so you can take more shots, or you need to insert a memory card. Depending on your model of camera you need a microSD or SD card. Let me know the model number of the camera and I will tell you what you need to get.

Internal memory is full

Usually, cameras come with a certain amount of internal memory before it fills up.In this case, your camera has about 10 pictures worth of memory before it is full (see picture).
You can get more space by purchasing an SD memory card from any office supply or electronics store.
You can also upload your pictures to your computer with your USB cable,then deleting the photos one the camera. The instructions on how to do this are in your manual.(If you don't have the manual at hand, there is a link here, see page 18)

Lost Leopard mail from iMa

I am afraid i gave in and found an Apple repair company. They sorted it out at a high cost but I cannot function with all my interests without a machine that I can trust. The engineer said he found my E mail in the waste bin. No idea how it got there or how I could recover it. I had look at the contents of this bin several times and never saw anything resembling mail.

This sounds like the HDD hard died. Sometimes you can hit "option" at the startup to see if the HDD is corrupt. If you see a file with a questionmark in it, then you need to reinstall the OS, BUT before doing this, restart it and hold "apple T" it make the HDD and the computer a giant external hardrive. Just get a firewire cable and backup the hard drive onto another system before reinstalling.

If you see a disk icon come up, there is definate directory problems as it still recognises that it has a hard drive. Disc warrior might fix it.

Just a guess, but I'm thinking the problem may lie in the format of the media. Try to format in FAT32. Also make sure that the full card is used ( don't do only 500mb or such ) FAT file system used to only allow a certain amount of space for
(F)ile (A)llocation (T)ables, and I think only a certain length of file names ( I'm thinking 8 character ), while FAT32 allows for 32 character file names, and allows for more FAT table information. I wouldn't ty NTFS if it does allow, as some portable devices do not read them, but fat and fat32 should be universal...

There are 2 ways you can fix this.

1. Upon Startup, hold "apple" key, option key, "P" and "R"
Hold them until you hear it chime 3 times then release. This will reset the parameters, and do the apple version of a defrag, only takes about 5 mins though.

2. Start up and hold "shfit" key. Hold until apple logo and spinning wheel show up, then release. It will perform a mini "permission repair" Once Mac has booted up fully. Restart.

This should solve your problems.
