I've encountered the same problem before, i emailed brother's help desk and here's their answer..hope this will help...

Unable to clean error means your purge counter is already full. Please refer below details for the
instructions on how to troubleshoot your machine.

1. To enter MAINTENANCE Mode: Press MENU, MONO START, 4X on ARROW UP (Please
input highlighted words within 2-3 seconds).

2. Using arrow up button look for the following:

a. 8 then press SET

b. 0 then press SET

3. Using MONO START, keep on pressing it repeatedly until the word "PURGE
XXXXX" comes out.

4. To reset purge counter. Please input the following using arrow up button:

a. 2 then press SET

b. 7 then press SET

a. 8 then press SET

b. 3 then press SET

Press Stop.

5. Using arrow up button look for the following:

a. 0 then press SET

b. 1 then press SET (To reset unit)

a. 9 then press SET

b. 9 then press SET (To exit Maintenance mode)

You could check for a paper Jam or foreign oblect in the machine, under the top cover and in the back cover.

If there isnt a Jam in the machine it means there is a mechanical problem. There is a sponge in this machine and once it is full it wont be able to absorbe any more ink from the cleanings. You will need to bring it in for services, they would replace the sponge and reset the cleaning counter.

You can find an authorized service center in your area from the brother web site.

HI ALL HOW TO CLEAN DCP ERROR CODE 46

the proper reset code sequence to reset DCP printers without numeric keypad should be as follows:
1. press buttons Set, Menu, Mono Start one by one, followed by up arrow key four times. this should all be done as short a time as possible, around 3 seconds.
2. enter maintenance mode 80 by pressing the up/down arrow key and set key to select numbers 8 and 0
3. press up arrow key several times to get to the Purge item
4. enter 2, 7, 8 and 3 using arrow/set keys to reset the counter
5. press Stop/Exit key to go to root of maintenance mode
6. enter 9,9 to exit maintenance mode

Hi there. . . okay . . . Follow this step
1.) Unplug your printer.
2.) Plug your printer again while holding the menu button 15 sec.
3.) select 8 by using the arrow buttons ,push OK and select 0 and push OK
4.) then numbers appear looks like this ###:### ###:###.
5.) now push the MONO button until the purge:#### appears on the LCD
6.) Select 2, push ok, select 7,push ok,select 8,push ok, select 3,push ok

7.) - switch off the printer ,switch it on
- ready to print

My printer have problem

you need a new waist ink absorber box.
Search this forum for error 46 or unable to clean. the procedure is explained many times (identical for all brother inkjets)

...because you have run the cleaning cycles too much, the waist inktank is fed up! needs replacing. contact brother hotline or try to get one from a service partner which can be found on the brother homepage of your country.

DCP-130C Clean Unable

- pull out the AC plug
- put back the AC plug while holding down the "menu" button and keep holding it (15 sec)
- now you are entering the MAINTENANCE mode and "error 46" pops up in the display
- select 8 by using the arrow buttons ,push OK and select 0 and push OK
- 00:00 00:01 OK (the display is showing this message)
- now push the MONO button 25 times until you see PURGE: xxxxx
- Select 2, push ok, select 7,push ok,select 8,push ok, select 3,push ok
- the purge counter indicates now: purge: 00000
- switch off the printer ,switch it on
- ready to print
