My external hard drive (Samsung HD501LJ) had the click of death. I read online that I should remove it from its case, switch it to ''slave'' and hook it up internally to my desktop... BUT, it has no option to switch it to slave, so I am not sure what will happen when I hook it up internally to my desktop. I also have no idea what cords I would need to hook it internally. I went to a local computer store and they told me it would be $800, which seems steep, especially when I am comfortable doing the work myself, as long as I know what I am doing. Help? Thanks!

When a hard drive clicks, it is definitely faulty and even if you insert it as a slave drive inside a desktop computer you most likely not be able to see the hard drive nor open and copy files off this drive.
I have found this out a few times with faulty noisy (clicking) hard drives.
If you need to recover data from this hard drive, then there are companies that can dismantle and retrieve data from faulty hard drives platters BUT it will cost you an arm and a leg for their services.
I suggest you purchase a new hard drive and insert it into your external hard drive adapter case and you will have a new external hard drive.

YOU HAVE TO PUT IDE OR SATA CABLE TO THE DRIVE AND ONE MORE THING IS 4 PIN SUPPLY FROM SMPS.YOU HAVE TO PUT CONNECTIONS LIKE THE FIRST HARD DRIVE ALREADY IN THE COMPUTER
