You need a virus scanner on the PC You usually goto start> Programs> and then look for the installed program - as mentioned below - run it and there you will an option to scan
Not sure what you may already have, PCs are often supplied with a commercial product such as Norton, Mcaffee or Kaspersky Usually the virus definitons get updated for the first 90days and then you have to purchase the product updates for an annual fee
Check to see what program you have - if is out ofdate, you will need to

  1. update and subscribe to the program or
  2. remove the program and install one of the free versions avaibable
There is also a good online virus scanner Heres is a link to one of the online scanners http://housecall.trendmicro.com/uk/
If you want to use one of the free programs - I suggest avast, I use that on all friends and family machines - but there are others

  1. Avast -- http://www.avast.com/en-gb/free-antivirus-download - to download the file -- Feee Registration for an annual key -- http://www.avast.com/en-gb/registration-free-antivirus.php
  2. AntiVir http://www.free-av.com/
  3. http://www.filehippo.com/download_antivir/
  4. AVG http://free.avg.com/gb-en/homepage
Two other programs to have
  1. Malwarebytes http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php and
  2. superantispyware http://www.superantispyware.com/download.html
Do NOT have two antivirus programs installed and running onthe PC at the same time To remove the antivirus installed demo installed on the PC - you may need to use one of the removal tools
  • Norton Removal Toolhttp://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039
  • Kaspersky Removal Tool A link to Kaspersky - this varies with different versions

WEB based virus scanning

If you have been infected with a virus and you do not have a virus scanning program installed on your computer or laptop, you can try removing the virus using a WEB based virus program provided you can still access the Internet.
Once your have suceeded in removing the virus, I suggest you install a virus program. There are freeware virus programs on the Internet such as AVG, but generally a commerical verson offers better protection.

The school computer was loaded with different kinds of viruses?what would I do after I downloaded an anti-virus software?

Hi. Thanks for your question.

Every anti-virus software has function called "full scan" or "deep scan" you need to perform this scan to remove all of the viruses. After it's finished program should give you report on how many viruses it's fund and what are your option on what do to with infected files. To have peace of mind run scan again after first one has finished. That way you can be sure that PC is free of viruses.

Thank You for using FixYa.

I have a virus and stmanteec antivirus notification keeps popping up on my screen: What can I do??? Help Scan type: Auto-Protect Scan Event: Threat Found! Threat: Trojan.Zlob File: ...

If you have a virus you can not delete or if your system will not boot up correctly and you suspect a virus is the problem, a recommended solution is to start your computer in safe mode and run a virus scan. By running your computer in safe mode, non-essential processes do not start and non-core components are disabled. In other words, only the minimum necessary programs will load. Tough to remove viruses, spyware and other malware usually have no chance to run and disrupt your system and can more easily be removed.
**To run a virus scan in safe mode, you must have active anti virus software installed on your computer.
To run a virus scan in safe mode, follow these steps:
  1. If your computer is on, shut it down
  2. Power on your computer
  3. Immediately after you power on your computer, repeatedly press the [F8] key (about once per second)
  4. In the Windows Advanced Options Menu screen, use the arrows to select Safe Mode and presss [Enter]
  5. Select your current operating system and press [Enter]
  6. Select the user you would like to login under (if applicable)
  7. When your system finishes booting, click the Start button on your task bar
  8. Move your cursor over All Programs and navigate to your anti virus program
  9. Click on your antiv virus program to run it and follow the anti virus program’s normal steps to run a virus scan
  10. After the virus scan is complete, Delete all detected viruses
  11. Close out of your anti virus software
  12. Restart your computer (it should start in normal mode)
