I had a similar problem on my Liftmaster units made by Chamberlin. I would leave the garage door open for hours during the day so our dog and children can enter the house through our garage and laundry room. Everytime they come into the garage the Light's would go on because of the safety sensors are "tripped" at the bottom of the garage door tracks. I turned off this feature and my lights are lasting much longer now. Over 1year in fact. To turn off and on this feature, make sure the opener light is off, then Press and Hold the Light Switch on the Wall Control Until for about 10 seconds till the light goes off. This deactivates this sensor from turning the lights on, but does NOT deactivate the sensor for Stopping the door if something is under it. Safety is still preserved. Additionally, my door opener would vibrate while operating, and need to be aligned - I did this and also prevented the bulbs from "shaking". As we know the light bulb filaments are brittle especially after some use - this I think also helped lengthen the life of my lights on the opener.
Unplug the opener and remove the bulbs. Use a small screwdriver to pull out on the center contact in the socket. Make sure you are using standard bulbs.
replaced gears on my neighbors and had same problem< took cover off of limit switches and found a switch had a bent arm. straightened it and all worked good.
check the infared sensors make sure those are working right. Yo may have to adjust the tension for bring down the door.usually a screw on the motor to adjust the senisitivity.
You must have a three function wall switch. This means in addition to a button that opens and closes the door there are two other buttons on the same wall switch. One is marked LIGHT and the other is marked LOCK.
To have your lights come on automatically when you walk into an open garage you must START with the lights ON. To turn the feature on, turn the lights on manually with the wall switch, then press and hold the LIGHT button for about 10 seconds until the motor unit light bulbs flash. Now, if the light bulbs are on, manually turn them out and then walk out through the open door. The light bulbs should come on.
To disable this feature, start with the light bulbs OFF and everything else is the same.
Turn off the breaker for the unit. Set up a good ladder, change the bulb. Release the opener from the door, turn the breaker on, and try the opener while it is disconnected from the door. If it works, give the chain a good spray of wd40, followed by a good spray of chain lube or spray grease. Operate the motor back and forth, spray grease wherever the chain attachment rides the bar. Once it is working good and free, try to connect it to the door and test it. If it has a problem, check your door rollers and hardware.
You need to reprogram the keypad. Press and release the learn button on the back of the motor. Within 20 seconds, press your four digit code into the keypad and press and hold the enter button until the lightbulb on the motor blinks once. You are finished.
Its possible there could be a problem with the circuit board, the other possibility is that every time you break the beam of the photo-eyes located at the bottom of the tracks, the lights come on for another 4.5 minutes (if it is a chamberlin brand opener).
