I have a Roper top load washing machine and the drain and spin cycle stopped working. After washing a load, it doesn't drain the water out and the spin cycle doesn't kick in. Once the "washing" cycle stops, the machine stops. The water doesn't drain and the clothes just sits there in the water.

Set the timer to spin manually and turn it on.
Does it spin?
If not,
Your lid switch is bad and must be replaced.

If yes it does spin.
The timer is bad.

My machine stops working after the rinse cycle and won't go into the spin cycle. The water stays in the tub and will not drain. I have unplugged and replugged the machine just to make sure. I wanted to see...

It sounds like the Drain pump may have stopped working. After the rinse cycle, the machine should drain the water and start spinning. The Drain Pump should be at the bottom of the machine.

I have a Roper washer. It filled with water to wash, but when it came to draining the water to rinse, it just stops. It will add water on rinse cycle, but it will not drain or spin.

Sounds like the lidswitch. As a safety, the tub will not spin if the door is up (open). In turn, it will not drain if it wont spin. This is a common problem with whirlpool washers. You can go to searspartsdirect.com to get the breakdown and order the part.

Washing machine stops at rinse cycle

Sounds like a faulty lid switch. The switch will not allow this unit to drain/spin if the switch is faulty.

Roper washer does not drain

Alicia7q : Faulty water pump or restriction in drain line between tub and outlet hose.

arlenekc,: That metal thing is part of the motor. What you have is a leaking water pump.

badwasher,: Check the lid switch. This machine will not spin or drain if the switch is faulty.
