Hi,

Well it depend that which is your primary switch, for example 8 port switch is primary, in that case ,you can connect your router to one of the LAN port of 8 port switch. And connect one more cat5 cable into LAN PORT number 2 and your 16 port switch LAN port number one, then you can connect rest of computer in remaining 15 port .

Hope it can resolve your query

Good question.
To link the new switch, take a short cable from the LAN port on the new Switch and connect it to one of the existing ports on the old or connected switch. it's just a daisychain.
Just keep in mind that the LAN connection on the Last switch must be connected to a PORT on the prior device on the LAN.

You need a router to share internet connection. You can only use this switch if your modem has a built-in router. Can you verify what modem brand and model number you have?

Sometimes the 8 ports 1-8 stop functioning and sometimes the other 8. Presently half the switch is dead and only ports 9-16 are functional. The switch is atleast 5 yrs old can it be repaired. Rgds and...

Yes it can be repaired. You will need to hunt around for a circuit diagram for it. I have four of these old things in commission at home here and this exact thing happened to one of them. I ran a multimeter over the power supply circuit board (top left) and found one of the capacitors out of spec. The resulting limited power to the rest of the unit meant that it couldn't cope with traffic on all ports. Replaced and fixed the problem. Needed soldering iron and multimeter. Good luck, hope this helps.

Not enough ethernet connections, can I buy a spliter or do I have to buy another D-link with more connections.

You would be better buying a "switch" rather than another router.

you simply run one cable from the router to the switch, and the other ports are used to connect your extra PCs.

be sure to get a switch with enough ports on it. They typically come in 5, 8, 12 or 16 ports. And remember, one port on the switch will be used by the router.

Beginner in networking

um, each switch will have a starting number of open ports, it is best to choose a switch that has enough to start your project, and a few open spares, that can be used later, as you expand the network. switches are sold in a 4 port 8, 16, 24, 48, 64, 128 ports. you can also link two switches, to add more workstations, it would be better to have one switch, with as many open ports as needed, rather than linking. So plan ahead, and leave a few open ports for later upgrades

NetGear ProSafe FS116P 16 Port... Problem:

I had the same issue with the 8 port prosafe GS108.
open the case, look for the small (barel like shape) capacitors near the power connector.
Their top is mostly silver and should be FLAT, if it is uneven or slightly expanded as if ready to explode, that is the one that need replacement.
Best source is any old motherboard or if you prefer, buy a couple new ones.
6.3 Volt, 1000mF (micro Farad)

If you cannot determin which one is gone, just replace both or how many your switch has.
