The printer cartridge latch is broken

The left latch is broken. I've tried taping the cartridge in but I still get a remove and check cartridges error or an insert left cartridge error. I can't find a replacement for the latch on the HP site.

Also, in the meantime, if I can't get the printer up and running, is their any way to bypass it so I can just use the scanner?

Hi, I have a HP 7960 printer and the left latch has just broken. HP will not help, full stop. This is from experience. Once out of warranty and it breaks, bin it and buy a new one. However, these bits can be easy enough to replace IF you can get them. (You will not get them from HP). I have got a printer from a bin (not the same model) but the latch appears the same. I

will try to replace tonight.Try Ebay, some guys sell broken printers, ask them can they get it. Try your recyle yard, I know many people gave got the bit they want there. I know it's a shame to bin a printer just because a little bit of plastic is broken and you may have just bought multiple sets of cartridges. Keep trying, don't give up!

Hi again. I solved the problem on the 7960 with the broken latchby getting a similar printer (not exactly the same model) but it had the same latches. I removed the broken latch and installed the one from the scrap printer. It's still working! Noel P

I have a dell all in one printer 944. When I turn it on it keeps sending the message, "change ink cartridge" I have changed the cartridge twice and message remains the same. Is it broken?

Are you using Dell Series 5 ink cartridges?

Please unplug the printer from the wall. Now remove the power brick from the back of the printer for 60 seconds. Now plug everything back in. This will reset any error messages the printer has. Now open the printer with the power on and the cartridges should go to the center to be replaced. Take out both Dell Series 5 ink cartridges and make sure the tape is off the cartridges and insert both back in and make sure the seat properly and latch. Close the printer and it should print an alignment page. If you still get the error message, please read bleow.

Black cartridge = black side(left side) Color cartridge = Color side(right side)

Photo Cartridge = Black side(left side) Color cartridge = Color side(right side)

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges have a sensor in them that cannot be reset. Article on refilling Dell ink cartridges.

Dell Series 5 ink cartridges can be purchased at Staples, Walmart or Dell's Website.

It is also possible to get a new ink cartridge with a bad sensor. Please take it to the place of purchase for a refund or a replacement one.

I just put a new black ink cartridge into my printer and now it says error with alignment I've reinserted the cartridge several time and it says the same thing everytime. What do I need to do? and...

Make sure you are inserting the correct version of black cartridge for your model. Try to remove both cartridges from the printer. Close the cover. Unplug and re-plug the printer into the power source to reset it. When the printer turns on, reinsert your cartridges. You can also try to insert a different known working black cartridge to determine if the other is faulty.

Welcome to Fixya

This means the the printer cannot determine which cartridge is causing the error. Make sure that you are using original HP cartridges.

Please see troubleshooting procedure below:
  1. Remove the color cartridge from the left stall (which has a blue latch) and refasten the latch. Leave the other cartridge in place.
  2. Close the printer, wait 10 to 15 seconds, then look at the LCD display.
    • If the LCD display reads Insert Color Cartridge in Left Stall , the color cartridge may be causing the problem. Follow the steps below:
      1. Clean the color cartridge contacts. Click here to see how.
      2. Reinsert the color cartridge into the carriage and close the blue latch.
      3. Close the printer and wait 10 to 15 seconds.
      4. If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , replace the color cartridge.
    • If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , follow the steps below:
      1. Reinsert the color cartridge.
      2. Remove the black or photo cartridge, depending on which one is installed in the right stall. The right stall has the gray latch. Be sure to refasten the latch on the empty stall.
      3. Clean the black or photo cartridge contacts.
      4. Reinsert the black or photo cartridge.
      5. Close the printer and wait 10 to 15 seconds.
      6. If the LCD display reads Remove and Check Print Cartridges , replace the black or photo cartridge.
  3. If replacing cartridges fails to correct the problem, click the link at the top of this page to contact HP.

Hi!

This link guides you on how to replace the cartridge:

Replacing the print cartridges
  1. Turn on the power.
  2. Lift the print carriage access door on the front of the unit, just above the output tray. The print carriage will move into the middle of the access area. Figure 1: Raising the front access doorc00004385.jpg
  3. Release the cartridge to be replaced by pressing down lightly on the top of the carriage latch and then pulling the lower section of the latch forward. Lift the latch.
  4. Grasp the sides of the ink cartridge and pull the cartridge out to remove it. Figure 2: Removing the cartridgec00004386.jpg
  5. Remove the replacement cartridge from its packaging. Touching only the black plastic, remove any tape covering the nozzles. Do not touch the gold-colored contacts. Figure 3: Removing the protective tapec00004387.jpg
  6. Holding the cartridge with the printed label up, slide the cartridges, one at a time, into the print carriage as shown below. Insert the black print cartridge (HP 56) into the right side (with the gray latch) and the tri-color print cartridge (HP 57) into the left side (with the blue latch). To install the optional photo cartridge (HP 58) for six-ink photo printing, remove the black print cartridge (HP 56) and insert the photo cartridge (HP 58) instead. Figure 4: Inserting the cartridgec00004388.jpg
  7. Latch the cartridge by pulling the lower section of the latch forward and pressing the latch down. When the latch is down, release the lower portion of the latch so that it catches under the tabs. Do not use force or damage might occur. Figure 5: Latching the ink cartridges in placec00004389.jpg
  8. Close the print cartridge access door. Figure 6: Closing the access doorc00004390.jpg
  9. A message will appear in the front panel display requesting that the ink cartridges be aligned. Press Enter to start the cartridge alignment. Two pages will print. Following the instructions printed on the second page, place the first page on the scanner glass in the lower-right corner and then press Enter to finish aligning the cartridges. Remove the page from the scanner glass when complete.
