Dishwasher leaking from bottom

I am trying to replace a chopper impeller in the bottom of a very old whirlpool dishwasher and can't get the chopper off (the grey plastic thingy). It was leaking out the bottom and they told us that it could be a diy job and that would take care of it

The leak is coming from the main seal? The chopper thingy on these old machines will not come out without a fight. These impellers have been there a long time and has had lots of hard water and crud to hold them on. Get a screwdriver or a reasonable facsimile and carefully bust it off. Be careful not to damage the shaft. If you pull the whole motor assembly out, replace the rubber gasket too.

Water leaks out of the front of the dishwasher between the top door panel and the small cover that sits under it. Is it an easy fix and cheap or should I get a new dishwasher?

Hi

The issue is with the water not draining as something might be blocking the drain pump assembly thus the water is leaking. To solve this issue you'll have to take the front lower access panel out and then clean the drain pump assembly completely, also clean the impeller and chopper assembly located at the bottom of the unit. After this is done the issue should be resolved, if not then check the float switch mechanism and make sure that is fine. Hope this helps...please post back for further assistance.

My dishwasher does not wash the dishes, and all th...

Either:

  1. the pump is clogged - there is water, the motor will run but no water is circulated. Check pump filters, check chopper and impeller. Disassemble and clean pump if necessary.
  2. motor in main pump is not working - could be caused by something stuck on the impeller or chopper or could be a problem with the motor itself or control board. Check if line voltage is coming to the motor during wash/rinse cycle.
Good luck,

First, confirm that the holes are not blocked on these arms. (I did not want to assume you have done this.)

Then check the impeller on top of the motor stem for being loose or worn/damaged - to rule the impeller out. If it is fine, then the motor is failing and too weak to drive the spray arms.
To answer your question, I think the answer is "They don't make them like they used too!"

Either:

1. the water does not get into the dishwasher open the dishwasher 3-4 times during cycle, you should see some water at least once, if not - check water valve, water level float and water pressure.
2. the pump is clogged - there is water, the motor will run but no water is circulated. Check pump filters, check chopper and impeller.
3. motor in main pump is not working - could be caused by something stuck on the impeller or chopper or could be a problem with the motor itself or control board. Check if line voltage is coming to the motor during wash/rinse cycle.

Whirlpool dishwasher chopper blade

you can replac the chopper as a seperate part, but will quickly clog, and destry ohter parts of the unit if removed. dont take this the wrong way but if you have a garbage disposer already rinse the dishes better to avaid further clogging of chopper

I have a Kenmore Dishwasher, it appears to go through the cycle, but it will not remove the water from the dishwasher, the dish detergent and water are at the bottom of the dishwasher

If you truly have power and the thermal fuse isnt blown you may need a new impeller. My impeller and the waste chopper went bad when my son left something on a plate. It broke the impeller and bent the chopper. It wasnt cheap but I did it myself. Make sure you replace to old gasket with a new one, supplied in the kit.

Whirlpool dishwasher model gu1200 not working

I checked. There is no sheet of any kind inside or below the door of my Whirlpool dishwasher.

In any case, opening up the non-washing washer revealed that the filter behind the chopper assembly was clogged with food. I cleaned it off, put the thing back together again, and it was washing dishes again, until about three days later. I took it apart again and found food clogging the filter behind the chopper. I thought the chopper wasn't chopping, so I replaced it. It was around $16. About three days later it wasn't washing dishes again.

Further examination (dis-assembly of the sump motor and impeller) revealed that the end of the impeller (which is designed to engage the chopper) had broken off, thus the chopper no longer spins with the sump motor. The impeller costs about $20 and isn't too hard to replace, as long and you keep track of what you've dis-assembled and put it back together in reverse order.

On whirlpool dishwashers, the sump motor drives the impeller (it's connected via the threaded end of the motor shaft) and the impeller, in turn, drives the chopper. The chopper you can replace from inside the tub, without removing the dishwasher from its home or taking apart the sump assembly. But save your $16, as that probably isn't what is wrong... The impeller, being screwed onto the motor shaft, requires complete removal of the dishwasher so that you can completely remove the base assembly that holds the motor assembly.

If you have a GU-series whirlpool washer, the tech manual can be found here:

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/52521bdbd0ef763c85256cbc00520548/$FILE/8178022.pdf

It has complete instructions for the replacement of every part.

You need to remove the lower spray arm (the little plastic nut in the middle of the arm can be removed with a 3/8" nut driver), then the dome housing, then the impeller, then the entire cover. This gets you down to the motor where the chopper blade is at. There's probably something hard that's getting in the blade. If you don't find anything, you'll need to replace the motor and the seal kit, which includes the blade and the seal that does not come with the motor.
