Oven will not heat

The oven of our Tappan gas 30" slide in range will not heat anymore. The past couple days it was taking forever to preheat. Now only the burners work. There is no gas smell.

This can be caused by a weak/inop hot surface igniter or a defective gas control valve. First you will need to verify that the hot surface igniter is coming on(you should see it glow in the burner compartment). If it is not glowing then you will need to verify that the wiring harness has voltage to it when the oven thermostat is on. Also check the igniter for any cracks or damage and if found then replace the igniter. If it is glowing then one thing that you can try(be very careful doing this) is to give the gas control valve a light tap with something hard like a wrench when the oven is turned on,igniter is glowing but the burner is not on. You will need to remove the broiler/storage drawer at the bottom of the oven. Once you pull the drawer out you should see the gas control valve at the back of the range. Try turning on the oven and lightly tapping the valve housing after the igniter is fully on. This may loosen up any debris inside the control valve housing that might be causing the problem. If the oven burner comes on then try completely turning the oven on and back of several times. And when I say completely I mean turn it on after the igniter is not glowing and burner has shut off. This works about 30% of the time. If the burner control valve sticks again after trying this procedure then it could be the control valve and/or the hot surface igniter defective. The hot surface igniter would need to be disconnected from it's harness and tested with an OHM meter. Most igniters should have a 500 to 700 OHM reading. If you get a reading that is way off then the igniter is defective and replace it. If the igniter tests good then the gas control valve is suspect and replace it. Most appliance parts retailers will test your igniter for free. When the igniter is on it should glow very brightly. If it is dim then that is a sure sign it is bad.

My oven takes forever to heat up if it does at all

If it's a gas range and you can see the ignitor glow, but there is no flame within 90 seconds after you turned the oven on - replace ignitor.

Oven takes forever to preheat

The way the oven works is like so:
1) User sets the desired temperature
2) Power is sent to the ignitor
3) The ignitor is then energized, drawing 3.2 amps of current
4) When the 3.2 amps is drawn, the gas safety valve is allowed to open and gas flows into the burner assembly in the oven.
5) This gas is then ignited, causing the oven to heat.
6) As the oven heats up, the oven sensor, which is the metal rod located at the top on the rear oven wall, converts the heat into an electrical signal, relaying this information to the main control which in turns displaying the temperature.
(In models with a dial thermostat, there won't be a sensor, though a metal wire with a bulbous end will be present, which is actually connected to the thermostat.)

I have a Tappan gas stove that takes forever to heat up (oven) and I smell gas before it starts to heat. Help?

Hello,
Thanks for answering my questions. It sounds to me like your oven's safety valve is going bad. There have been many times when I am at a customer's house and it has been a while since they used the oven, and it seems to take forever to light the oven. Just tapping the oven safety valve with a wrench or handle of a screw driver is all that's needed to open the valve and light the burner. As long as your oven's igniter glow bar is lighting, (glowing orange or sparking), then the oven safety valve is your problem. It is a silver rectangular valve in the far back bottom of the oven with the orifice on top of it and the burner tube coming down over the orifice. Try tapping it and see if that works. Otherwise, just have it replaced. Douglas

try changing oven senso located in the oven cavity (upper right or left). its approximately 4-6" long and has a plug-in on the back of the oven

Oven controls

those failure codes usually mean the oven sensor is out of range or has an open circuit.
you can replace the sensor for about 50-75 bucks and that will allow the oven to heat properly again.
you wont need to do any reseting or clearing of the code, just fix the problem and that code will go away.

Oven takes up to 25 min. to preheat

I would suggest looking at how long before the bake burner ignites. If taking longer than 5 minutes before it ignites, then you are looking at a possible bad ignitor. The ignitors just don't last more than 5 yrs with regular use.
