I have the same drive and a similar problem. When I insert blank DVD+RW into the drive, it doesn't recognize the disc, but when I insert a blank DVD+R disc, it recognizes IT. My question is, why won't it recognize a blank DVD+RW disc?

I have the same dvd burner that you described above. I only recently started having a problem with it. It now only reads cd's and will not read dvd's nor will it burn anything but cd's. How can I fix this problem? Any ideas? Thank you for any and all of your time and help in this matter. I have tried going into the hardware device manager and re-installing the device. It worked, but only once and will not work anymore. HELP!!!!!!

HL-DT-ST DVDRRW GWA-4164B came with my emachine W3410 used to work ( in 2005). Does not see DVDs in drive any more to record, regardless of software in use. OEM Nero 6 wants paid upgrade to support DVD burning. Purchased Roxio 8 yesterday, it does not see DVD-R disks . Manufacturer is unknown to me.
How do I get a firmware update ?
Or is this just a piece of junk that needs to be replaced?
I want to do DVD Data disks so I can transfer Data to my Ubuntu PC, as I have no network connections. Some files are too large for CDs (which the drive handles slowly, but OK ).
Please advise, as this situation is becoming very frustrating.
I used to be able to make vcd's , but no more.

When i put one in prior to the instruction it still does not know. Someone told me the rom is not compatible with vista. When i have windows search for a driver it tells me it is the most recent update. Can u help. I have a dell xps 400

I've got the very same comment for a while now, and I'm starting to fear that now it starts not to read CD's as well, for ususally when I'm playing a CD-ROM game my whole computer crashes.

Oddly enough, you don't need drivers for the CD/DVD drives to work. They aren't even recognized unless you have a non-microsoft burning program, like Roxio or NTI CD and DVD maker. Sounds to me like your DVD burning program may be corrupted. Those programs are worth updating. Find out what burning software you have-- its easy and FREE. Download Belarc Advisor, which not only tells you everything in your computer, with model numbers for hardware and all of your software (with their unique codes), including the manumacturers, and will also inform you if you are missing any needed Windows updates. Once you know what you have, if it came with the computer, seek an update at the computer manufacturer's website, as it may be a special program not related to the burning software purchased from the software manufacturer---go to their website for upgrades. Let me know if you run into trouble.

To Tom Scott--these drives are slaves, they do not need drivers. You have to have a good CD-DVD burning program for them to work. Your program may have become corrupted. Identify it in your programs, or with Belarc advisor, and reinstall it from your computer manufacturer's help website. That really should fix it.

I ended up replacing the CD/DVD read- writer , as I was informed that this behavior indicates that it is dying , and this particular model was a cheap piece of garbage. This information was given to me from a local computer repair shop, who had had many pass through their doors; and after attempting everything else, replacing the drive tended to be the cheapest and easiest solution.

That is ********..... the "Belarc Advisor" tells you nothing about DVD RW drive at all. I wasted my time and bandwidth to look and download it for nothing.

I think this bloke is a "Guru" of some ********.

I also have the same DVD drive (RWA-4164B) it doesn't recognize any DVD but only sees CD.

Does anybody actually know anything in this forum to fix it, the drive is only 31 days old

MY DVD\CD writer does not work

You may need to go into the inside of the computer and unhook the cables and rehook them up again this time try the windows only burner or go to safe mode and have a look there before all others.
