This is caused by problems with the mechanism. There should be an indicator on the LCD screen when this happens. If the indicator shows a teardrop, it means the unit thinks it has moisture (dew sensor).
The most likely fault is a defective capstan motor, the motor that moves the tape through the camera. Time for a Canon service center.

OK, this sounds crazy, but I found a solution on the web for this. Rest the camera flat in your hand with the monitor side down. Then, tap the camera on the plastic cover piece, firmly but not overly aggressive, three times. Then, open up the compartment and insert the tape.

WARNING: Do not tap on the monitor side. I did this and ruined the playback picture. However, even though the camera is useless to me, the tape still inserts just fine.

My intial problem was the fact that the tape would only load into the yoke mechnism but not stay in the camera long enough to engage and close the door. That probelm was amazingly fixed by using the tap method found above. Thanks to DaveInAZ, "Rube Goldberg" would be proud of you internet problem solvers. These fixes are so ridulous on first glance that you'd swear they could never have possibly worked but they did both times.... Just imagine what we all dd before the internet..... Pay Canon big dollars (not to mention shipping

The cassette compartment does not retract when a tape is put in. It just ejects the tape and dispays the "remove cassette" message.

This is usually caused by a defective component in the tape detection circuitry and can usually be repaired fairly inexpensively. However, it's not a user serviceable problem and will need to be repaired qualified service technician.

My name is Rick and I'm a professional repair technician with over 20 years in the business and have repaired many of these. I'm semi retired and work from home with little overhead so I can keep repair costs low. If you decide to have the camera repaired, please click HERE for a directory listing that suits your needs.

My canon dvc keeps telling me to reject my tape. It retracts just fine. But it won't let me record or play back. please help!!

I have the same problem. The only solution I've found is to manually wind the tape forward about 15 seconds and it works fine again. The problem only occurs if I let the tape wind all the way to the beginning.

Tape is stuck in cannon zr 100 camera and will not eject

There should be a manual eject button. You know like on CD-ROM's there was a small whole for a paperclip to fit into, there should be one on that camera. This will eject manual, and becareful the tape might be caught on the head.

Minitape will not eject

On another forum here, the suggestion was that you wrap on the screen side of the camera with your knuckles. This method absolutely has proven to work on three ZR100's I have for the school I work at.

Try it yourself and see.

NOT TAKING TAPE

I have one doing the same thing. I called Cannon and the told me I would have to send it in for service. Now after reading that about 10 other folks having the same issue, I think Cannon has some issue with the ZR100. Of course mine is out of warranty. Everyone should call Cannon and complain.
