My Mighty Mule 500 was used a few times daily for almost 3 years on a small gate. The fuse started blowing randomly caused by the brushes being completely gone.

Replacing the motor with the one discussed above took a couple of hours and a lot of patience. First, it was helpful to unscrew the arm a little (making it longer) so the tiny switch inside didn't get broken when the arm was pulled apart. Second, removing the 5 gearbox cover screws and taking a couple of the gears out to get to the two screws holding the motor was a small challenge but not too bad. Third, the special TVS diode soldered to the motor tested open with my meter but I later found out this was normal because it is designed for suppressing lightning strikes.

I've had several Mighty Mules and the 500 was noticeably slower than the others. I thought this must have been because it has a longer arm for larger gates. The replacement motor must run at a higher RPM though, because the gate now opens as fast as it did with older Mighty Mule models.

Dewalt drill melts battery

There may be a short in the motor or wiring, or the gearbox is broken or otherwise seized up. Dewalt provides replacements for most parts at reasonable prices, so it's worth taking the drill apart to find out what is going on. I suspect you will find damaged wiring inside due to overheating; you may be able to identify the problem by seeing where the wire insulation is charred or melted. Unless you have a good drill of the same model so you can compare electrical resistance, it's a bit hard to ID a bad motor with an ohmmeter. However, you can try visual and olfactory inspection - if it looks and smells burned, it probably is. You still should check the transmission to make sure it isn't the source of the problem. Dewalt 18v XRP Hammer drill cause battery to burn, I'm talking flames and smoke. Motor run in both direction.

I hope this drill is still under warranty as the battery is in serious trouble. As long as the motor is turning, it should not be causing the battery to do this. Hope this helps!

When I use the drill there is a burnt smell afterwards...what is causing this?

Drillbits "burn" what you are drilling when there is too much friction. That is caused by a variety of things...including...lack of lubrication for metal work...and usually a dull drill bit in wood.

If you see no smoke comming from the point of impact...it might be your drill motor..check it out when you are using it...it could be dirty and need a good cleaning...or it could be burning out from excessive or improper usage.

Unable to get to brushes on DeWalt DW959 drill type 1.

the brushes are made to slide into the side of the motor. gently pull up on them. Also I would recommend that you go to Dewaltservicenet.com and type in your model number for a parts explosion and part number for replacement brushes. Let me know
