Try to create a new user account

1) Click on Start
2) Click on Control Panel
3) Click on Classic View on the left hand side.
4) Click on User Accounts
5) Click on Manager Other Accounts
6) Click on Create a New User Account
7) Type in the name of the new Account and select the user as administrator
8) Then click on Create Account.

The Account would be created successfully.

Log Off from your user account and login from the new user account that you have created.

To get all the settings from your old user account to the new account copy all the items from c:\users\old user account name to c:\users\new user account name.

It looks your profile is corrupted. You can login with administrator's login id other than the local profile user id and rename the old profile located in c:\documents and settings\ your user login name folder
and rename the folder. After that logout and login again with your user id, one having problem with profile and again go to the c:\documents and settings\ your user id name folder which you renamed and move your critical data on desktop or my documents to the new profile.

Network issue

Hello

This is an unusual error. Error Code 1236 - The network connection was aborted by the local system.

There is no single issue that causes this error code, so we need to verify all of the networking basics are covered and working.

1. Verify the IP address, Subnet Mask and Default Gateway are fully entered and / or populated by the DHCP server. Click START, then RUN, type in CMD then click the OK button. Type IPCONFIG /ALL - verify the three fields all have valid info for your network.

2. Verify you can see the local network - including other computers and network devices. This will rule out the possibliity that this computer cannot see any network devices and not just the shared folders

3. Log the user out and have another user that can access the shared folders log into this comptuer and try to access the shares. The user profile could be corrupted and preventing the user from accessing the shared folders. IF the new user cannot access the shared folders, then it is the PC / OS causing the issue. IF they can access the shared folders, backup the original user's data, delete their profile and have them log in again to create a new profile.

It is always recommended to upgrade Windows XP to Service Pack 3 - unless you have a very specific program that will not run on SP3.

My laptop suddenly went bonkers. it was ok then when i turned it on it took ages for the screen to change from saying"microsoft windows xp" like 5 or ten mins...then screen looked black for a while after...

Sounds like your best bet is a fresh install of the operating system. Since it is an Inspiron, you may have the option of using PC Restore to re-image the system (Provided previous owner didn't hose the restore)

other things you can do are run diagnostics (Hold Fn Key and Press Power Button) and make sure you don't get a hardware failure in the diags (Passing diags is no guarantee of no faults, just none found)
If all else fails, boot to XP CD and do a clean install of Windows, then load the drivers.

The I6400 is a good system, (I'm writing this on on) but the description you give tells me the OS is hosed and likely a reinstall is your best and fastest resolution.

had similar problem w same router when originally purchaased call linksys theyll walk you through it there custmer support is xcellent and they speak english only takes a few minutes

Network path not found as defined below when logging on

Sounds like you took your work computer home to do some work and its looking to connect to the company server to get your credentials to give you access to the system and files.

I would guess you need the VPN connection to connect to the server its looking for.
From what info you provided that's all we can tell you.

Windows cannot locate the server copy of your roaming profile and is attempting to log you on with your local profile. Changes to the profile will not be copied to the server when you logoff. Possible...

When you "logon" to your local network, your computer is configured to fetch your "desktop" (My Documents and wallpaper and everything else) from a "server" computer on your network.

Was your "logon" to the local "domain-server" a successful login?
Does your local Network Administrator indicate that the "domain-server" is functioning properly?
Does that server's log-file show any error-messages, such as "not allowed to login between 10 PM and 6 AM" (a "security" setting on the server).

Since your "desktop" could not be loaded from the domain-server,
your computer has used a "local" copy of your "desktop",
and it is warning you that any changes will *NOT* be "merged" back to your "network" profile.

Have you contacted you local Network Administrator? What did she say?

Network Path not found

Your windows profile is broken,.or loaded from another computer (or server) that is down or not running. If you and your computer go direct to the net, not through some kind of network, then you might want to creat a new ADMINISTRATOR profile (via windows control panel)and delte the old one once you have copied what you need.

Go into safe mode at start up, log in as administrator, and do a system restore. Pressing F8 at start up will take you to safe mode.
