    Will hold charge

  • Anonymous Jul 01, 2008

    I'm having the exact same issue. It looks like it's charging for the first 20 seconds after plugging it into the wall. Then the entire device goes blank and the battery never charges.

    I can no longer even turn mine on. I hold down the power button until it lights up and stays on, telling me that the DJ is on. But nothing shows on the screen at all. Frustrated.

FYI, replacing the battery did not solve the problem of the battery refusing to charge. Instead, I've spent $30 at batteryship.com and since I've opened the battery I can't return it. There must be a software or hardware failure that's preventing the unit from charging the battery.

    FOR THE DELL DJ 5 GB PLAYER.........Get a Dell AC wall charger. The AC charger must be for the Dell DJ 5 GB MP3 player ( eBay under 10m. Some of the dell firmware’s had issues charging this player a charger will end your problems most likely I’m 95% sure. You could also check the battery wires they are to long and if they get routed under the battery can short out, they should be bunched up on the top of the battery where there is some extra room and don’t get crushed.

This is a valid problem. My pocket dj (the 5gb model) charges just fine with a car charger (model CC-0103 rated 850mA). The dj has a fairly new battery. The problem is that it is the ONLY charger I have that will charge it. Usb cables, other car chargers, or wall chargers won't charge it. Why? I wish I knew.
To make it worse, I bought another cc-0103 charger recently and it won't charge it either. Opened them both and the new cc-0103 chargers have different circuits/components from the older models. Further investigation showed that I can remove the battery and charge it directly with a charger I rigged up with no problem. Why is the dj charging circuit so picky it won't accept a nominal 5v input and use it to charge the battery?
So the problem is in the pocket dj charging circuit, but I'm not smart enough to figure how to fix it. Hopefully someone else here is.

Can the battery of a Dell Ditty be replaced? If so, how?

Hi, You can buy the battery at any mp3 player accessory store around your area, or you can other on line through eBay.com and Amazon.com.

How to Change the Battery in a Dell DJ-20..

The DJ is an MP3 player developed by the Dell computer company. Like any other battery-powered electronic device, the battery will likely give out and stop working at some point. If this happens to a Dell DJ, the two main options for fixing it are to send it to Dell to have the battery replaced, or do it yourself. You can save a great deal of time and money by replacing your own Dell DJ battery.

Things You'll Need:

* Micro screwdriver set
* Tweezers

Instructions

Hold the Dell DJ upside down so you have a clear view of the bottom.

Wedge a flat-head micro screwdriver in between the black plastic piece and the USB port on the bottom of the DJ. Pry the plastic piece off and set it aside. You should now see four tiny screws on the bottom of the DJ.

Remove the four screws with a micro Phillips-head screwdriver. Set the screws aside in a safe place.

Pull the metal plate out that was held in by the screws. You may need to use a screwdriver to help pry it out. Once removed, you will have access to the inside of the DJ.

Locate the small red cable with a white plug on the inside of the DJ. Carefully pull the plug out. If you cannot grab the plug with your fingers, use a pair of tweezers to do so.

Grab the battery with a pair of tweezers and pull it out. The battery is the thin rectangular piece that the red cable is attached to.

Insert a new battery where the old one was. Plug the battery into the motherboard where the first battery was plugged.

Reattach the metal plate on the DJ with the four tiny screws. Snap the black plastic piece back on to finish the job.

I'm afraid I have bad news. Your battery has seen better days. A new one on Ebay is about $15 shipping included last time I looked.

My Dell MP3 Player Won't Charge

I had the same problem for weeks. Very frustrating. Try the following as it brought my pocket dj back to life. I found that (while plugged into an AC adapter) by inserting a paper clip in the hole on the bottom (reset button) and holding it there for 5 secs it would power cycle the dj then the charging icon would appear in the top left corner, however it did go away after 5 icon flashes. I did this repeatedly. I noticed that every time I pwr cycled it , I got more icon flashes and it would charge for a bit longer. Finally it charged completely. Weird but this is what worked for my player.

Dell DJ

hold switch? try holding play and do the reset. keep holding down play as the DJ starts up and you see rescue mode, select Disk Cleanup. Wait a few mins, the player will restart and you will see Rebuilding Library, hopefully it will work after. If no go, Its a hardware failure most likely, the only option is to call Dell for a free replacement, dont worry about their refurbish talk, there is a high chance you will get a brand new DJ. Warranty status?? Try charging through the wall AC if you've been trying the USB, or the other way around. It might be a bad battery that doesn't take a charge, especially if it turns on when plugged to the wall/USB. Good luck
