HI I HAVE AN E MACHINE about 4 years old. the model number is D2880, the serial number is QAW4A 202 03256, AND I THINK that the mother board number is D845GVSR, AND I have two questions. I added another hard drive, an IDE WESTERN DIGITAL 500GIG..BUT it only allowed usage of about 127 gigs. I did not use the emachine restore discs (which I have) instead I used an older windows xp disc to install the operating system. I noticed on a forum where someone mentioned that the restore disc has an option for LARGE DISC SUPPORT. WAS THAT MY PROBLEM? THAT I USED A WINDOWS XP DISC, INSTEAD OF USING THE EMACHINE RESTORE DISC THAT CAME WITH IT? SHOULD I START OVER, AND USE THE EMACHINE RESTORE DISC?
ANOTHER OPTION WOULD BE TO FLASH A NEW BIOS, I EMAILED EMACHINES AND THEY GAVE ME A LINK FOR AN UPDATED BIOS FROM GATEWAY BUT THEY SAID THAT IT HAD NOT BEEN RIGOROUSLY TESTED BY EMACHINE AND THAT IS WHY THEY DO NOT OFFER IT ON THEIR WEBSITE(THE LINK WAS A GATEWAY LINK). SO HOW SAFE IS IT TO UPGRADE AND FLASH A NEW BIOS?
AND WILL THAT GIVE ME LARGE DISC SUPPORT OR SHOULD I TRY THE RESTORE DISCS FIRST? [email protected]
Hi,
flashing a bios, can render your machine/motherboard useless.
You should always ensure any bios download is from a trusted source. if you experience a power failure, or an incomplete bios file. your computers as good as dead.
Windows 95/98 only supports disk drives to a certain capacity. if you updated to windows 2000/ME/XP your problems may be solved. I,d certainly try that first.
Bios flashing Last resort, even after finding a reliable bios update. also ensure the bios file is 256mb-512mb or equivalent. as this is standard bios file size.
Finally check that your hard-drive does not have a jumper ( Small white/black ) plastic block restricting the drives registered size.
When you install windows XP, it will ask you if you wish to enable LBA ( large block Allocation ) Select Y ( yes )
