No internet connection on two desktops

Hi. I'm just a computer illiterate dad trying to help the kids. We have a wireless -G router. Have had it connected for about a year.I am running to a laptop and two desktops. A fewdays ago the kids said they have no internet. But I do have it with the laptop. What are the chances that there is a problem with my internet server and my laptop just picking up the signal from my neighbors house? And if so any troubleshooting remedies to try. thanks Tony

Hi Tony, you think your laptop is connecting to your neighbor's wireless network. So try this.
1:Go to Control Panel, click on network and internet connections, double click NETWORK CONNECTIONS. Point your mouse to the WIRELESS NETWORK CONNECTIONS. It should show that you are connected(and it will show the name of the network that you are connected to). If you do not recognize the name of the network that you are connected to then you are connected to your neighbor's network.

IF YOU ARE CONNECTED TO linksys--unsecured wireless network, there is a chance that your wireless router is not functioning at the moment.

Try this first and i will be waiting if you have a follow up problem.

Good Luck

When my dads computer is on my computer is not able to connect to the internet . any suggestions?

I think it is that your internet is not fast enough .. your dad computer draws all the signal leaving none for you .. as it is wireless I find it fascinating have never herd of this before .. as I said we have four computers in our home and they are all working at this moment by wireless .. the only thing can suggest you try is a direct connection and see if it still happens I suspect it might but the other way round perhaps we have a 20mb broad band and when all the computers are on the draw 5mb each so you see it is relative to the size of your connection .. Have 2 desktops and we need internet connection on both

Hello...if your son's desktop is set up near the router, the simplest way is connect his desktop to the router via an ethernet cable.

To do this, find an ethernet cable. Plug one end into a spare port (socket) on the back of the router, and the other into the ethernet port on his desktop (it should look like this, with the ethernet symbol under it).

That's it! He should soon be connected to the internet.

NOTE: If you need to buy an ethernet cable, key words to look for are Cat5e or Cat6, straight or patch cable - NOT crossover.

If your son's desktop is not near the router, you may want to consider a wireless connection. Please come back to Fixya if this is the case, as this takes a little more time.

Pc connection problems

Sounds like you are setup to use Internet Connection Sharing. don't do this. Have each computer connect to the internet via the router. If the router is wireless connect all computers wirelessly to the router that are wireless capable and any computers that are not wireless capable, connect them to the router via a cat5 cable to the cat5 ports on the router. This will solve your problem. BPCS

No connection

One thing to check is to make sure your dad connected to your wireless environment because so many people have wireless routers today he may have accidentally connected to a neighbor, and the low/non-existent signal strength will cause him to not have an internet connection. Also make sure no one messed with the router configuration because there is an option to turn off the wireless capability of the router. If it got turned off then turn it on and you should be good to go.
