That usually means the gears in the retract mechanism are bad or jammed. You can try to gently push the lens in but don;t force it. Unfortunetly this means a repair at the depot so unless it is covered under warrenty you might want to look at a new camera instead. That is cheaper than the the repair will be.

Turns off right after startup chime lens does not retract

This can happen when you use a battery that is almost without charge. Please remove the battery and charge it, before placing it back. Then be careful not to touch the lens, till the camera has a chance to retract it.
After you place the battery the lens should retract.
If the battery is really charged. You should not think it is charged, because you had it on the charger till the light indicated battery full.
There is also a chance you stopped the lens while it was coming out. A sensor detected this. To avoid damage to the lens construction, the camera switched off automatically. Also remove the battery and after a few seconds replace the battery and switch on the camera. Careful you don't touch the lens again.

Lens error

There is a possibility that a bit of grit or debris has got stuck in the retraction mechanism or the lens has been knocked out of alignment.

The camera will have switches inside to tell it when the lens is retracted or extended and if it doesn't make contact within the expected time then it will give this error.

If the there is no warrantee or you dont mind voiding it then I would suggest carefully disassembling the camera and turning the retraction motor by hand to see where the problem is.

Please comment again if you discover anything.

Good luck

What is the solution if the camera lens doesn't retract?

There are lot of reasons, for the camera lens to stop working. Here are some of the examples.
  • You dropped the camera down.
  • You stopped the lens from retracting by holding or pressing it down.
The result of such impacts, stops the whole lens array from working.
The solution is simple,

Tap the camera after you switch it on.(Usually an error message is displaced as "Lens Error" or "Please Switch off and on the camera again" depending on the manufacturer). If the lens retract then, you are the lucky person in the world.

(OR)

Please take it to the nearest service center.(e.g Sony, Kodak, Canon)
The repair personnel will analyze the damage and let you know the estimation to repair the damage. It costs almost 90$ to replace the whole lens array.

I believe this tip has helped you lot.please rate my tip as helpful.

LENS DOES NOT RETRACT NOT TAKING PICS

Try to hit the side very gently while switching ON the camera. Do this several times, It should reset the timing of lens.A little bit of more pressure can be applied while it is hitted. If does not reset, then the timing lens gear is damaged. Take it to qualified service technician to get full service. Thanks.

Lens won't retract

You could try to gently pull the lens straight. If it's leaning to the right then pull the lens to the left. Don't use brute force but it's possible to realign the lens this way. If it works you'll hear a click and the lens will look straight. Switch on and see if it retracts. I'd only use this as a last resort because you can cause additional damage if it's overdone. It has sood success rate also

Hi-- my canon SX110 won't switch on properly. it keeps telling me there's a lens error and to restart. when this has happened in the past, i've just switched it off and then on again and it's worked. not...

Try removing and replacing batteries to reset the camera. Ensure that batteries are fully charged.

If that does not clear the problem, then the lens error is usually caused by mechanical faults concerning lens assembly. This happens because there is dirt inside the lens (sand dust), or one part in the lens assembly is bad or went out of place.
Because of this he lens cannot extend or retract fully, the error is detected and lens error is returned.

Sometimes this can be fixed playing with the lens during extraction or retraction to help the lens asset getting back to normal.
If if does not extend tapping gently the back of the camera, and if it does not retract helping lens back in while turning camera respectively on and off.

More often the camera lens must be disassembled and re-assembled by a technician to fix the problem.

Olympus Camedia C5050 Zoom

The unusual beeps usually occur when the lens cannot be extended or retracted, often due to dirt in the gearing or the lens cap being left on.
Try using canned air to blow around the outside of the extension cylinder, and, putting a fresh set of batteries in the camera (it probably got stuck on since it couldn't fully retract the lens and didn't complete the shutdown).
If that doesn't work, try taking it to a camera store with repair technicians and having them take apart and clean the lens extension/retraction mechanism.
