I have Mavis Beacon Platinum 20 on one of my computers. I know my user data is in the prefs.dat file. I want to use my file on another computer that has the Mavis 20 program on it along with about 3 other users. My question is how do I move my file over without deleting the other users?
First add yourself (or have an admin add you) as a user on the 2nd computer.
Login into your account and start Mavis Beacon.
Create a name and do an activity or two.
Exit Mavis Beacon and open your My Computer icon
Navigate to the following folder:
C:\Documents and Settings\YourUserName\Application
Data\Broderbund\Mavis\
Now delete the existing prefs.dat file and copy your prefs.dat file into the "Mavis" folder.
Restart Mavis Beacon and you're ready to go.
The previous poster didn't really answer the question, since the OP presumably wanted to move over her accumulated user data, not simply create a new profile on the new machine. Unfortunately, it looks as though it's not possible to do what is being asked for, because Broderbund intentionally obfuscated their data and set up their file management in an astoundingly stupid way. In order to use your old data and the newer profiles, you'll need to maintain two separate prefs.dat files. By default, Mavis Beacon saves these in the Users folder, under the individual user who is logged in, so you could create a new user profile on the computer. Otherwise, you'll have to manually copy and paste each time you want to switch Mavis Beacon users.
