Hi there,
First off please make sure that the drive you have is a DVD-rom and not a CD-Rom because if you only have a CD-rom there will be no way it can read a DVD.
Now after that check if you have the correct codec to read the DVD file. Try downloading this K-lite Mega Codec Pack.
If that does not do the trick please check if your computer can detect or recognize your DVD drive.

Because you are trying to install the wrong driver.
Go do windows update and windows will install the correct driver for you, this will work on windows xp, vista and windows 7 only, you did no state your OS.

Its usually good to specify in as much detail the motherboard specs. First you need the Server edition of the latest or any (stable). However, it supports the 64bit architecture. So you can do the Ubuntu 9.10 Server or Ubuntu 8.04 Server 64bit.

for cd roms or dvdr/rws u dont need to insatll driver so just connect it as putting the jumper to acurate position if your ide cable is having some thing else connected from before just put the jumpher to slave or else master and put the power connecter and start the pc and your dvd or cd r/rw is ready to rock if u need to use it for copieng or makind data cd please install nero for pc and tostit for mac and u can get thease software by download or buying them..

Normaly the lens has such low life that we think the drives are dead. try to clean it with a good quality CD LENS CLEANING KIT. If there is nothing new, means that the problem was cause by dust on previous cd's, even me I never care about loosing time cleaning a cd when want to see or play it, then this is what can happens to all of us.

The drivers are to the drive be knowed and easily acessed by the Operating System.

Is the drive appearing in My computer with a drive letter?

If it isn't:
1. click Start, point to Run, type diskmgmt.msc, and then click OK
2. If you see your drive listed without a letter, right click on it and assign it a new drive letter
