I have a top loader and i have been getting an LL error

I have a top loader and i have been getting the ll error code. it happens only when clothing is in the machine it doesn't matter if it is 1 article or stuff to the brim. i dropped the clutch out and re lubed it thinking this would solve the problem but it has not. any advice on were to go next would be extremely helpful

i was able to run this test this afternoon and i got the expected results from this test. this happens during the spin cycle of the wash. whats weird is its not happening all the time. on light loads (1-3 towels) or a few pairs of clothing the machine will function just fine. when i load it up to the regular levels (5-6) towels a weeks worth of cloths the washer will error. it does have a rattle or a squeek that i can here. any other ideas to test. i am weary of calling a repair man due to price.

  • Anonymous Mar 16, 2010

i went ahead and did the quick spin test with a full load of towels in their after it LL'ed it was only able to spin up to 160 rpms.

i am not positive what you mean when you want me to spin the basket? do you want me to do this with clothing in or without clothing in the basket?

i am not sure how to check the diag codes i looked in the service manual and it said to just push the up and down buttons when in service mode. when i did this the display just stayed at 00.

as per not voting i think i already made the mistake on voting and am not sure how to undo it but will gladly change the vote.

im also not sure on how to shout out to a repair person being new to this site and all

this is a lot for me to try i will look at it this evening / tomorrow am and get back to you.

I would next check the TDS. Are you taking the error in Spin Cycle of the wash cycle?

Let’s do this quick check and see what you get for test results.

Tub Displacement Sensor Diagnostics check. This test is done with the washer lid raised see page 19 of the SM for the details.

a. Enter the Service Mode by pressing and holding the Enviro Plus and Spin Only keys for three seconds or the display reads “00”

b. Press the Super Wash key display reads “in”…something like that.

c. Press Delicates the Display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

d. Push tub to the back right corner of the machine the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

e. Press Hand Wash.

f. Pull tub to the front left corner while pushing the tub down the display should change to “UO” (Unbalance open). Release tub and the display will show “UC” (Unbalance Closed).

What are your results?

I would next do a Quick Spin Test and see if the machine will Spin Up through the RPM ranges to 850RPM and give you a PA code for the test. If it passes with an empty wash basket try it with the wet load of towels and see if the Spin Cycle will make it to 850RPM. Record the fastest RPM range the machine will step up to. See page 14 of the Service Manual lower right hand corner for the test.

Maybe the Outer Tub bearings are dragging/failing from a possible slight Tub Seakl keak. Can you spin the Wash Basket CCW with one finger with very light resistance if you haven’t already tried this? I’m trying to get a feel for drive system resistance.

Have you reviewed the Diag code blocks in machine memory for reordered faults?

I would do that and write down the recorded fault blocks then clear the list.

Do me a favor; don't vote for my solutions unless I give you positive troubleshooting for fault isolation and issue correction. I'm no expert just and owner of the machine like you trying to save a buck.

My first troubleshooting step is a first troubleshooting step toward fault isolation of the LL error code.

As you can see from the Service Manual troubleshooting support for the LL error is extremely lean.

Let’s also shout out for a repair person to chime in for troubleshooting/fault isolation resolution steps of the LL error code related to the FAV6800A or FAV9800A machines. This may help lead to a more timely positive fix.

“”i went ahead and did the quick spin test with a full load of towels in their after it LL'ed it was only able to spin up to 160 rpms.””

Did the quick Spin test with the wash basket empty spin up to 850 RPM and give you a PA code to the display?

With an empty wash basket open the washer lid and with your pinky finger spin/rotate the wash basket CCW the Spin Cycle direction. The wash basket should rotate CCW with very slight resistance. This is rough way for me to judge drive system/outer tub bearing resistance. If the resistance of the Outer Tub bearings indicate minimal and you have not heard any squeaks or excessive noise from the bearings then I suspect they are still performing as designed and not causing drive system binding. I would then move on to fault isolation with the TDS or Motor Controller. I feel at this point Tach signaling from the Motor and the basic operation (health of the Motro) is fine.

“”i am not sure how to check the diag codes i looked in the service manual and it said to just push the up and down buttons when in service mode. when i did this the display just stayed at 00.””

    From page 17 of the Service Manual;

    Display Diagnostic Codes

The diagnostic code display can be

toggled on and off from Service Mode

by pressing the Wrinkle Control key.

The display will show a “d”.

Enter Service Mode do the above and step thru the Diag code blocks with the up and down arrow keys.

Only diag code blocks that the Control Board detected with a sensor error will show up. Record the error code blocks and then clear the list. This may not help me because I suspect the codes that mean anything to me for this failure scenario 5, 10, and 16 are going to show up and send you to this check on page 12 of the Service Manual; We did the thru the lid check of the TDS and you report normal UO and UC (unbalance open/unbalance closed) TDS signaling.

I have to break up this post due to “Message Board Length exceeded”. I seem to get that when I don’t respond with call in a qualified “Service Repair Company”

  • Anonymous Mar 16, 2010

    Second part of response;

    Wet Clothes

    • Very small clothes loads can cause unbalanced

loads - add additional towels. (I feel this is not an issue)

    • Excessive suds may have been present. (I feel this is not an issue)

    • Check Tub Displacement Sensor connection and

main harness connector at machine control board.

    • Check Tub Displacement Sensor for 0 to 3.0 Volts (With the tub resting normal the D.C. voltage

DC output voltage between ground and the board will read around 1.5VDC on the DVM)

input. Check for 12 Volts DC input voltage between

the ground and the board output. Only check for

voltage at the Tub Displacement Sensor. Do not

perform a continuity check. See Tub Displacement

    Diagnostics.

This is the same test I had you do thru the lid because I suspect you are a non technical owner, possibly don’t own a DVM to measure the Tub Displacement Sensor D.C. voltage swings at the Control Board. But maybe you can do this check if you have a DVM and feel comfortable reading D.C. voltages at the Control Board let me know.

If not you could remove the front panel and do the test described on page 19 and check the range of motion of the TDS to produce UC and UO indications on the LED display. I feel the TDS could be false signaling. By that I mean with slight TDS movement caused by Outer Tub movement the Control Board is signaled to terminate the spin cycle with error code block 5, 10, or 16 prematurely.

I have to break up this post into two responses “Messag Boar Limit exceeded” with this BS board.

With the Diag code list cleared do a Spin Only Cycle (not necessary to run a wash cycle) with the wet towel load and let me know what codes show up with the LL fail code on the display.

“”as per not voting i think i already made the mistake on voting and am not sure how to undo it but will gladly change the vote.”” I’m over it… I do this for nothing no kick back from FIXYA just trying to help other FAV6800A/FAV9800A owners…. it just kicks the **** out of my average which is the indicator of my credibility.

“”im also not sure on how to shout out to a repair person being new to this site and all””. They are observing. I was hoping to have you DIY the fix and save a $65 or so on a service call. If I or another forum member can’t help you with this issue you may have to call in a Service Repair company or look at another purchase.

I hate to see that happen with a couple of parts you can most of the time repair the machine very easily. If you are near 19344 area code I would bring over a TDS and Motor Controller and possibly a Control Board if this is not an issue with the Outer Tub bearings.

My washing machine alarm "LL" then power is shutdown & cannot power on anymore

The LL error code indicates "Large Load Detected". If the load is not too large and you have taken some items out and it still comes up displaying the error code "LL" it may be caused from a friction issue. It could be the spinner support with bearing causing the code if it's creating enough friction. You did not indicate if it has any problems with draining water. If the washer is not able to drain completely it could also cause the "LL" error code.

Top loader - whirlpool - he - door will not lock - lock light blinks

Your door lock assembly has gone bad. You'll need to get your model # and go to either www.apdepot.com or www.repairclinic.com or your local parts supply to pick up. To start the repair you'll need to lift the top up by taking the two metal clips, one on each side, and then pulling the top forward. Once that is done lift top and you'll be able to locate the lock located in the front. Once you find the lock follow the wires back and you'll see that they go back and then upwards. Set the top back down and then remove the back of the control panel, which are 1/4 screws I believe. Located the wires from the lid lock switch and see where they connect on the control board , from behind, it shoould be on your left side close to you. Disconnect the wires and now you can remove the lock safely. Install new lock and put the machine back together;

It shows the letters LL

LL = Lareg Load Detected.

I think you may have some drive system resistance/binding. This can be difficult error code to troubleshoot with knowing more info.

What was in the wash basket that caused the LL error code?

Have you tried to power cycle the washer (remove 120VAC line Cord then plug back in)?

Any unballance error codes like dc or UC in the past.

Hi

Thanks for using FixYa. Error oL means overloaded and it flashes when the machine/motor control detects a load size that exceeds the washer’s capacity. To clear this error you’ll have to open the door lid to clear display, remove excess laundry, then restart the cycle. Please do rate the solution if the issue is resolved or post a comment for further assistance.

LL what does that mean on FAV6800AWW

LL = Large Load detected. Unless you really overloaded the machine I believe there may be other issues lurking. How large was the wash load that caused this error code to the display?

I'm an owner like you with some basic knowledge and hands on experience. LL code is large load detected. I believe this alarm is triggered by increased motor load/torque.

This error code is not documented very well in the FAV6800AW/FAV9800AW Service Manual. If you haven’t overloaded the machine then there are other issues. Pull the SM from that link above. It has the all important Service manual and Use and Care Guide combined.

I think this may be an issue related to the Clutch or possible increased rotational resistance of the Spinner assembly and or the Transmission/Tumblers. I vote right now for a Clutch issue. If you have basic mechanical skills take a look at this post. I would drop the clutch out of the machine and inspect and clean up and re-lube the One-way Roller clutch bearings and see if this helps.

I would go into Service Mode and step thru and document Diag codes form page 17 of the SM and see if you find any recorded error conditions. I would be curious to see if error code block 16 indicates a fail condition. I'm thinking of a possible high motor torque condition detected that may have triggered the LL code just a WAG at this time.

I would write down all error codes then clear all error codes and start collecting from your next wash cycle but I’m going to assume the LL code happened during a spin cycle do you know what part of the wash cycle the LL code triggered?

Maytag neptune tl displays LL and stops during the rinse cycle

Sorry chukenne,
Having not experienced this issue on my FAV6800AWW I missed this error code in the manual is that your machine type? Error code “LL” is documented in the troubleshooting part of the SM as Large Load detected. Does this happen with all wash load sizes? I would go into Service Mode and step thru and document Diag codes form page 17 of the SM and see if you find any recorded error conditions. I would be curious to see if error code block 16 indicates a fail condition. I'm thinking of a possible high motor torque condition detected that may have triggered the LL code just a WAG at this time. You may want to clear all error codes and start collecting from your next wash cycle but I would make a list of all codes before you clear them for reference of fail events of past wash cycles. I’m going to assume the LL code happened during a spin cycle. What caused you to drop the clutch out and re-lube/ Were you taking dc/UC errors in spin cycle? Rich

Ultimate care ll

Either the bleach is being put to the clothes too early, or too much laundry at one time and the bleach cannot mix properly. Check a small load to see if you get the same results
