I have a Gateway T-series laptop, model w350a. I am trying to restore it to factory settings. I have lost the system disk in a recent move to another state! I have tried the F10 option, Alt-F10. System restore won't work either. It tells me it can't restore to the points it shows available. I need to restore this laptop ASAP. There is too much spyware and programs on it, so it makes my laptop run slow. I just need a fresh start! Anyone know how I can get this done? I do have a recovery partition, that I don't know how to access. There is a file named Recovery. I find Info, file type application. This is locked. I click it open and it says PC Angel, contains files for your system recovery. I can't use anything over there that I know of. Any ideas! Thanks for the help.
Gateway Direct systems went "media-less" back in September 2004. In the event of a system crash users could either 1) restore their systems from the Recovery Partition OR 2) from the backup media that they were prompted to create on first power-up -- which would provide them with up to 5 blank CD-R discs depending on their system's configuration.
On the factory load of the hard drive, the recovery partition will not contain operating system files. It only contains application and driver files. The first time the recovery partition is used, it prompts the user to insert their System Recovery CD/DVD to copy files from the CD to the recovery partition. The Drivers and Applications CD is not bootable and does not contain Operating System files. The System Recovery CD/DVD is bootable but does not contain any application or driver files. If the end-user erases the hard drive and restores the computer using the System Recovery CD/DVD and an Applications and Drivers CD, the recovery partition is not recreated.
This means that you will need the operating system restore disc FIRST then the recovery partition will work for you

Restart the system. At the initial BIOS screen press ALT + F10 to access the e-recovery option. Follow the instructions.
Be aware that any data or programs you have added or installed after the machine was first powered up will be lost. This includes all accumulated operating system patches and updates. Be sure to back up any files or data you wish to save and be make sure you have the install media and product keys/serial numbers for any software you have installed since the machine was new before restoring the system to its factory default state. I suggest using one of the many available disk imaging programs to make a full backup of the hard disk that you can revert to if the restore process fails for any reason.
The disc is critical when you want to go back to factory settings, check out www.ebay.com there are sellers that provide a lot of different restore discs, you might get lucky. The other option is check www.gateway.com see if the have the supporting disc.
I have this laptop, too. The model number on the bottom is W350A and the screen case has a label that says "T- Series". So, what is the model number if not W350A?
the serial number is usually found at the bottom of your laptop, is not something that can be given to you online.
you may also want to try to do obtain your system info by going to start>run> then type msinfo32 and press enter. a box will appear with your system info, it's possibly the your model number and other details that you may require could also appear there.
When you purchased the computer, you should have received a set of "System Restore" CD-ROMs. Use them.
If you have lost them, telephone HP/COMPAQ, and order a replacement set of "System Restore" CD-ROMs. The cost could be $20 for the set, and $20 for courier-shipping. When the disks arrive, use them.
P.S. Backup all your music/files/bookmarks/contacts before doing the "factory" reset.
