Your yahoo messenger close when you open yahoo mail because on your yahoo mail the chat automatic sign in. For you to be able to sign-out that follow the steps below.
1. On the top page you will the see "Available" there is an icon "arrow down" click on that icon.
2. Click "sign out of Chat"
3. You will be offline for chat on your yahoo mail
4. Then sign in on your yahoo messenger.

Are you using yahoo mail and yahoo messenger account at the same time? Please remember that when you sign in at yahoo messenger.... you will be log out when you try to sign in to your yahoo email...that is because the chat is available in your yahoo mail account. Please disable your chat option by making it OFFLINE.

Hi, we now have several locations that are capable of accessing the Yahoo Instant Messaging feature. Yahoo Messenger itself, plus Yahoo Web Messenger, Yahoo All New Mail, My Yahoo, your Mobile phone, plus any other computer.etc etc. Yahoo classifies all these programs as different 'locations or devices' Yahoo currently do not allow you to have 2 open and active at the same time. If you have one open, and then move to another, one will close and you get a message telling you that you have been signed out. You CAN have Messenger and Mail open together as long as your status is set to "offline" in MAIL by using the drop-box next to your name and selecting 'Sign out of chat'. ( your chat contacts will remove themselves from the inbox until you make yourself 'available' again.) Please note: You may think you are signed out of Messenger when this is not the case. Hitting the 'X' when you close the Messenger page does not sign you out of Messenger it only closes that page - you have to Exit Messenger by right clicking the icon in the system tray.and selecting 'Exit' I suggest you make this setting. > (left click) Messenger > Preferences > General - check box "sign out of Messenger when I close the main window" > Apply > OK. If the above does not apply and you suspect your account is being used by a hacker. When you get signed out, close all your Yahoo programs and type your name into this software. Hit "GO" and hopefully it will show you as "offline". If not, contact Yahoo customer services

Hi, Since Messenger Version 9 was launched, Yahoo has prevented us from having 2 Instant Messaging capable programs open and active at the same time. For example, Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Webmessenger, Yahoo Mail, your mobile phone, Ipod, or other computers etc. etc. Yahoo classifies all these programs as "Different devices or locations". Navigating from one to the other will close one program and you may get the notification message referred to above.. Note. Hitting the X on the Contacts page in Yahoo Messenger does not sign you out of Yahoo Messenger, it merely closes the contacts page. Like WLM you have to close the program by right-clicking the icon in the system tray and selecting 'Exit' You can have Yahoo Mail and Messenger ( or any other program ) open at the same time as long as your status is "Offline" in Yahoo Mail. Use the drop-box next to your name and "Sign out of chat" Your online contacts will vacate the inbox until you make yourself "Available" again
Install older version of yahoo messenger.. And let me tell your one thing that, when to try to login to your yahoo account on yahoo messenger, your internet connection must be responding. This you can ensure by keeping your server busy(opening websites). The problem you are telling might be caused when you are trying to login to yahoo account through yahoo messenger and yahoo mail. I recommend you that you open yahoo account through yahoo mail(only if you are unable to sign in to yahoo account through yahoo messenger.) yahoo mail now-a-days is providing yahoo chat service when you sign in your yahoo account on yahoo mail. at left side of your mail box you can see yahoo mini messenger.
You can only have one yahoo "Instant message capable" program open at one time. So if you move from Messenger to mail or chat you will get this message. If you want to have Yahoo Mail open with another Yahoo IM program you will have to set your status to "offline" in MAIL by using the dropbox next to your name ( all new mail) select "sign out of chat" In Classic mail its located in the Inbox. Your online chat contacts will vacate the inbox until you make yourself "Available" again. Yahoo classifies - Messenger - Mail - webmessenger - my yahoo - mobile phones - computers etc etc as different computers or devices - hence the confusion.
This is a new feature that has been embedded into the new yahoo mail, so you could chat while on the mail box interface. It does offer flexibility for folks that would love to chat while on their yahoo box. Just some new innovations from the yahoo team. If you don't want this then click on arrow around the left hand side of your screen, it has "Chat" and "I am" under it. lick on the arrow and sign out, that would keep you signed off while you open your mail.
First you need to close the Yahoo messenger. As if login with it then the webpage of Yahoo will show you offline for chat..
Otherwise just login in Yahoo messenger and to any contact, double click on contact and find if you are able to chat with it then everything is OK.
