No control of platter speed

The 1200 turntable was not used for some time probably less than a year, so recently when I went to use it, turned it on and pressed start, the platter raced out of control, hitting the start stop button would not stop it, the speed selectors did not work as well as the pitch control. Only way to stop it was by turning off the power switch.Turntable is a well taken care of grey market turntable approximately 20 years old.

technics sl-5200 model, similar problem, have quartz selector and speed adjuster knob. sometimes does spin at proper speed and sometimes spins out of control like est 100-200 rpms?!??

  • Carl-Emil Jul 17, 2008

When pressing the start button the record spins way to fast and does not seem to be affected by the pitch adjuster. The power switch has gone missing and it is turned on/off by plugging in/out the power chord. Perhaps related to the pitch problem?

One of the drive circuits on the main board are faulty, and will need to be replaced. This is not an easy fix, so you will need to take it to a qualified service center for service and repair. Not an expensive fix, but a little time consuming in isolating the issue.

How do I fix a turntable used for playing records from being slightly slow

Try replacing the drive belt. Look under the platter for a 'rubber band' that would connect the platter to a drive motor. I bet it's loose. My other idea is crazy, however, they do sell an item called a "variac" which has a knob to control the voltage to the player. It's big and bulky and not worth the trouble. I'm a musician so I have to have a player up to speed or slightly detune my guitar. Good luck..

How to tweak the playback speed on Panasonic SL-HM42 turntables
recently-purchased-used-panasonic-sl-jxgmd5u3zcskalhaccgps5fw-3-20.png

You will need:

  1. 1x small Philips screw driver
  2. 1x small flat-head screw driver
  3. An ear for correct pitch and a little bit of DIY skill!

Step 1 - Remove the wooden base plate

After ensuring that you've removed the the rubber turntable slip mat and securely docked the turntable arm, carefully flip the turntable over onto its lid to expose the wooden base plate, as per below.

Using the small Philips-head screw driver, remove the screws holding the wooden base plate in place, then gently lift the base plate off the turntable.

recently-purchased-used-panasonic-sl-jxgmd5u3zcskalhaccgps5fw-3-26.png

Step 2 - Expose the pitch adjustment screws

Once the wooden base plate is removed, you will see the speed-controller circuit board on the right-hand side.
recently-purchased-used-panasonic-sl-jxgmd5u3zcskalhaccgps5fw-3-50.png

To expose the the two speed/pitch-control screws, firstly remove the screw holding the speed-controller circuit board in place, then gently lift the circuit board up on the free side.
recently-purchased-used-panasonic-sl-jxgmd5u3zcskalhaccgps5fw-3-41.png

Step 3 - Correct the turntable playback speed and pitch

The easiest way I found to correct the playback speed was to flip the turntable carefully back into the original position, allowing the speed-controller circuit board to hang free as shown below.

recently-purchased-used-panasonic-sl-jxgmd5u3zcskalhaccgps5fw-3-60.png

Next, play a record that you know well and are able to tell when the speed/pitch is correct (assuming you have an ear for correct pitch, that is!), then at the same time using the small flat-head screwdriver, gently turn the speed adjustment screw(s) to adjust the playback speed up or down until the correct playback speed and pitch is achieved (or at least until it no longer annoys you ;).

Turning the screws clockwise (to the right) will increase the speed/pitch, and anticlockwise (to the left) will decrease the speed/pitch.

NB - Both screws allow for fine pitch control, so if the second is already at maximum speed, you can use the first screw for additional speed.
Step 4 - Reassemble the turntable again

When you're happy with the speed of your turntable, remove the record, the mat again & locking the turntable arm, replace the screw holding the speed-controller circuit in place (as per Step 2) and then finally replace the screws holding the wooden base plate, as per Step 1.
Happy listening!

I own a SL1200 MKII and when the light "turn on" in the pitch control slider (green LED) the speed is not correct (big dots on platter move slightly) .Could you please give me some tips to solve...

Use the slide on the pitch control to move forward or backward until the dots stay steady. If it is a little old the quartz control won't work as well.

Hi, could just be platter not fitted hard down on spindle. I suggest you remove the platter and place it upon a dead flat surface to check to see that the platter is flat. If it is flat refit to turntable ensuring it is hard down on the spindle. If bent discard and replace with new platter.Platters can be ordered for all model 1200/1210 from [email protected]

Just bought a new technics sl-1200 turntable and the pitch speeds up and down causing music to sound funny....

You will need to check your belt for wear. Lift felt on platter and check belt tension. It may need replacing. To replace, simply lift platter section of the unit, taking note of the belt position. replace and your problem will be solved

Counter clock spinning

pitch slider can cause an unstable motor (clean with can of air and switch cleaner) if it spins counter clockwise it will be the brake. there is a little screw in a hole under the platter to ajust the brake speed.

Pitch is not working correctly

a) "dirty" main power switch, comes from sparking when power switch has been used a lot (happens also with some CD/DVD players - makes them loose some power - consequently, focus and/or spindle will not work properly). Try cleaning it up or replacing it (bypassing it will tell you if the switch is really the problem).

b) bad contact on the speed control slider (try moving it while slightly pressing it downwards, see if there is any change, if there is, have it cleaned up or replaced)

c) a problem with electronic speed control, possibly a loose solder connection or a bad capacitor somewhere in the speed control circuitry. If the circuit has fuses in it check if they are all ok. I once had a problem with a turntable that had a fuse "partially" blown (people were using the turntable a lot for "scratching" which overheated the fuse but hadn't blown it out, yet it changed in resistance from zero ohms to a few hundred ohms - the turntable began to **** and the speed was changing).

d) none of the above, it could be something else that i can't think of right now

hope ya get it workin'

Help for technics 1200 MK2 and 1210 Speed is too fast

On the 1200MK2 the pitch control slider is for just that purpose. Disregard the 0 setting and use the illuminated strobe marks on the platter to adjust to nominal speed. When they appear to be motionless you are there. The control on the 1210 may be a knob but the same principles apply.

Technics 1200sl pitch control

There seems to be 2 issues with this unit. Usually when the platter speeds up very quickly, one of the IC (integrated circuits) are faulty and needs to be replaced. However, I've never seen the 33/45 lights come on in addition. So, perhaps the issue started with faulty 33/45 switches, and it then caused a short to one of the IC's.

This will have to be professionally serviced, as it is not an easy fix. There are various circuits on the main board which control the drive, so it's a matter of diagnosing which is the culprit. The 33/45 switches will also need to be tested/replaced.

Turntable pitch control problem

sounds like the pitch needs replacing or tighting. Get them serviced. Ask your equipment supplier shop. Good way to check the decks are in sync is to place the pitch on each marked seting ie 0 / 2/ 4/etc making sure both decks are set to the same pitch adjustment speed. Look at the light from the on/off switch and check the 4x circles on the deck platter and make sure they are the same as each other. If you never used this before. set your eyes and pay attention, you will notice the pattern. I mix this way to get tunes roughly in time without listerning to the track - DJ EZ helped me with this years ago. peace DJ Nyce
