I gathered some information on your case. seems you are not the only one having this problem, here is a forum about same troubles with hdd in 2488.

If the above did not work, then the situation is :

hd inside is faulty, fixing it will be quite easy, the main problem will be to recover all your songs and files from defective hard drive first.

First of all, if the machine is under guarantee send it to a service centre and ask them to recover your files from old hd after changing it. If it is possible to get files, they will get them.

If you have to do the job yourself then you have to remove hdd, I think you will have to unscrew a door at the back of 2488. Unfortunately documentation from tascam is scarce, and I couldn't find schematics or servige guide.

Once you get the hd from inside I suggest monting it on an external hd usb caddy enclosure. so that you can connect it to a pc and get files out.You can buy caddy for low price in any computer shop.

Buy a new hd up to 120GB( do not know which is max hd size for 2488). Screw it back where you removed the original hdd.If you do it properly the format procedure should start in automatic once you restart the 2488.
