Probably bad drive belt need replacing.

The VCR has at least four "heads" two are for 2 hr and two for 6 hour (sp and slp)

It is most likely one of the heads used in the SLP mode is slightly blocked with tape debris--heads need to be manually cleaned in the right way.

This is adirect drive type and the poor picture quality has nothing to do with the belt.
The fault can be due to
1. fault head- since this is a Hi-Fi type , it is 6 head type. try cleaning the head to confirm, use a clean cassette.
2. Problems in the head amplifier circuit.
3. Check the RF connection to TV.
4. Clean the audio head and use a ordinary cassette to confirm the sound. Also try with a Hi Fi cassette.

If not the head is a suspect.

you can try setting your tv to record and your vcr to record at same time,,,i have digital tv and set record time,,then on vcr set to record avi at same time,,the only problem is the tv turns itself on when timer starts,, hope this helps and makes sense,,cheers.

maybe a broken break band on reel supply (left one) in the vcr !!!

The VCR stereo playback sound is only available through the AV/SCART connection and will not work through the coaxial antenna cable.

Is this a HiFi stereo vcr? When you cleaned the heads, did you only do the heads on the rotating cylinder or only the fixed tracking/audio heads between the cylinder and the pich roller?

Does a prerecorded tape ( not a self recorded from that machine play ok?

HiFi vcrs default to the audio head(s) on the tracking/audio head if the HiFi heads on the rotating cylinder are dirty or damaged.

If a prerecorded tap palys fine, then the erase head circuit has failed.

If sound is weak and warbles, worse on SLP than SP, a weak VCR power supply.

Does it do this with other television sets? If so, then it indicates the problem resides in the VCR. Rolling as you describe suggests either the VCR isn't producing a clean enough vertical sync pulse in the video signal, or the TV circuitry isn't processing the pulse properly. First, try cleaning the heads (not just the video head, but also the audio/control head which is to the right of the rotating video head. If this doesn't fix the problem, an electronic problem is likely. Unless this is a high dollar unit, repair is not recommended, as VCRs of the last 10 years or so are essentially disposable. I've done some looking on the 'net regarding copy protection, and it doesn't look like this is an issue here.

Are these prerecorded tapes or ones that you recently recorded? Or are they all normal audio tapes?? Try a pre recored and turn off the HI fi audio and thats an easy thing to do as put it in normal and mono.. Get back to us so we can assit. Not enough info as could be 100 things.

There are no such adapters that would allow 8mm, Hi8 and Mini DV tapes to be played in a VHS VCR. Only the old VHS-C tapes can fit and play in an adapter. There are several reasons why 8mm (or Hi8 and miniDV tapes) cannot be physically played in a VHS VCR: 1. 8mm (Hi8, miniDV) is a different format with different technical characteristics than VHS. These formats were never developed with the intention to be mechanically compatible with current VHS technology. 2. 8mm/Hi8 tapes are 8mm wide (miniDV is 6mm wide), while VHS tape is 1/2" wide, making it impossible for a VHS video head to read the taped information correctly. 3. 8mm/Hi8/miniDV tapes are recorded and played at different speeds than VHS, so even if the tapes could physically fit into a standard VHS VCR, the VCR still couldn't play back the tapes at their correct speeds. 4. 8mm/Hi8/minDV audio is recorded differently than VHS. 8mm/Hi8 audio is recorded in AFM HiFi mode, while miniDV audio is recording in 12-Bit or 16-Bit PCM digital audio format. So, even if the video could be played back in a VHS VCR, the audio could not be read properly. 5. 8mm/Hi8 video is of higher resolution than VHS and is recorded in a different bandwidth length (miniDV video is recorded digitally), so once again, a standard VCR still could not read the information correctly, even if the tape could fit into a VCR.
