Backfire will be normal if shuting engine off at full throttle. Idle engine down as low as it will go before shuting off and that should stop the backfire. Look under motor at pulley area and make sure there are no oil leaks, if not you have an internal engine problem rings or valve seals.

when was the last time you took a look at the cutter blades,,or serviced the cutter deck? if the cutting blades are blunt or rounded off it will stall the engine stress the belts and the clutch,,,also if the mower has been standing un ran all winter it may have "rust" on the engine valves,,running the engine unloaded for a time may knock this off but under load the compreshion is pushed up into the inlet and pops back through the carb,,,try putting into the fule a little "two stroke oil" only 5cc a gall no more! this will lube the velves and carb,,,but sharpen them cutter blades up first,,,or its like trying to eat a half cooked stake with a blunt knife and no teeth? that reminds me? were have my teeth gone?

My cub let out a big ploom of white smoke and shut off.

This is caused by two things low oil level and overheating, The oil also has a cooling agent in it so if it was run low the engine would not get lubrication and overheat possibly causing the conrod to break if you say its only 10 hrs old i would be talking to the dealer you purcased it from or the engine manufacturer. its unusual for an engine with very little hours on it.
