Have an RCA remote i am trying to use with my Vizio 1080p hdtv. Instructions on the universal remote are as follows: -Turn on TV -Press and hold "code search" untill light stays lit. release. -Press TV button -Press power repeatedly untill TV turns off. I am not able to geth the TV to turn off. Is the remote not compatible?

Newer brands of tvs are using new codes that old remotes don't have. Only older learing remotes from original remotes or USB upgradable or newer one that were made after the tv was made will work.

When you connect the vizio try changing the resolution settings on your laptop to see if that makes a difference. Could be that your video card output is not really compatible with the higher requirements of the Vizio.
