Can't remove lever hadle to replace cartridge. no set screw how do i remove the handle? i think it is a moticello. if not it has 4" centers with lever handle and it cost about $90.00 3 years ago.

Step 1
Turn off the water to your faucet.

Remove the handle to the faucet. Remove the small screw under the lever handle with an Allen wrench or Phillips head screwdriver, depending on what type of screw is present. Slide the handle back and off the faucet.
Step 3
Remove the temperature control knob, which is the round, dial-shaped fitting over the faucet cartridge. Put the manufacturer-supplied adapter on the cartridge. Line up the lever stop pin with the arrow symbol on the cartridge.
Step 4
Turn on the water and rotate the adapter to the left, or counter-clockwise, until the water temperature is at the level you want. Take note of the number to which the adapter points.
Step 5
Shut the faucet off by turning the adapter to closed and line up the limit stop dial with the number you noted previously.
Step 6
Assemble the faucet by replacing the temperature control knob and handle, then tighten the handle screw. Turn on the water and operate the faucet. If temperature is not set properly, repeat as necessary until you achieve the right setting.

If you install the regular cartridge with the notch in the wrong place, hot and cold will be reversed. Simply remove the handle and spin the spindle 180°.
Pull off the chrome stop tube that encloses the cartridge. There is a horseshoe-shaped retainer clip that must be removed. Use the small screwdriver or awl to pry up the top of the retainer clip. A plastic square head removal tool comes with the cartridge that you have purchased. Place this on the cartridge and spend back and forth to loosen the cartridge. Then take your pliers pull the brass spindle straight back towards you. If this proves too difficult and you are unable to pull it out you will have to buy a Moen cartridge pulling tool. Be sure to buy the right tool as they are not interchangeable. The posi temp tool is much fatter than the regular tool. The tool operates the same way a hub puller. Back off the knot on the tool as well as the screw. Place over the cartridge and advance the screw all the way. Now advance the nut.
After the cartridge is removed take the 3/4 inch copper cleaning brush and insert into the cartridge housing while spinning clockwise. When removing the brush also keep spinning it clockwise. After brushing, open the water main for about three seconds to flush the line out.
When installing the cartridge make sure that your notch is aligned properly and that the cartridge is pushed in all the way and that the two tabs on the cartridge are aligned vertically. Install the retainer clip. If it doesn't go in all the way either the cartridge has not been pushed in foreign off or the two tabs are not aligned properly. If the handle is a "knob" style handle, then there is a "not easy to detect" decorative thin circular plate that inserts into the center of the knob (Its usually about 3/4" to 1 1/2" in diameter)
Examine closely and feel for an edge or separation between the insert and main knob body. Pop it out with a thin-edged screwdriver or such.

If it is a lever type, there's usually a setscrew in a hard to see area behind the lever, where it meets with the faucet cartridge.

If the valve has been worked on recently, the integral stop for the cold side may not be open. There is also a possible obstruction within the cartridge. If it's like mine, there's a corrugated plastic ring just behind the handle that turns. Pry it back, it releases with clips, and remove the set screw. Once you unscrew it, pull the handle off, then remove the screws for the backing plate which are hidden behind another, clip on shield. You can then get to the two outer and four inner screws that hold the covers over the cartridge assembly which just pulls out. Of course, be sure your water is turned off during all of this.

pop the cap on top the handle,remove screw,work handle off and unscrew retainer nut. a tip,raise the center of cartridge up when you reassemble,so it work's good .

1- turn main house water valve off.
2- turn shower on to relieve pressure from the system.
3- remove handle by either popping center plastic cap off to reveal a screw or looking for a set screw on the underside of the handle. Depending on which one you have, then remove the screw.
4- once screw is removed, the handle should pull off.
5- the cartridge will be retained by a cotter pin like piece of metal. Usually takes some needle nose pliers to pull up to remove. Then take pliers and pull cartridge out.
