Our 3 month old Blu-Ray player has stopped playing in the middle of a movie. The player "locks up" similar to one's computer freezing. The only was we could start the movie again is to shut our entire entertainment system down:cable box, HDTV, receiver, and the DVD player and then turn everything back on. This has happened on only two movies, one was a regular DVD, and the other was a brand new Blu-Ray disc.
Try running a dvd cleaner through it first, before trying anything else (the type that looks like a DVD with a brush underneath).
The regular DVD might have been a fluke (scratches, rental?, burned dvd?)
Was there anything special about the new Blu-Ray Disc - what was the tile? On certain titles, you may need the firmware upgrade found at:

player display's cannot read disk. (cannot play disk) after disk was already playing, and froze up
My Sony BDP-S300 freezes up when playing "The Golden Compass". Had to hold the power button down until it powered off and reboot. It froze up twice during the coarse of the movie. It also froze on the menu on two different discs. I have the latest software version 3.80.
I have the Sony BDP-S301 and it sometimes stutters, and some times it freezes in the middle of playing a blu-ray disk. The only way to unfreeze is to press the power button for a few seconds, which resets the player (I think to all default settings). Sometimes it has played a whole movie thru without doing this.
I called Sony support and they said I should return the player for service. He acted like he had never heard of this problem before. I am affraid to send it back and end up the same when it is all said and done.

I have the same issue, while watching the Spiderwick Chronicales I get 2/3 of the way thru the movie and it freezes or goes back to the beginning.
I have the 3.8 software update which I thought was the latest but no luck.
It ony happens on Blu-Ray disc's generally the new releases.
Is there a fix?
Yes i have had my blu ray player less than a year and it freezes up constantly on new and rented movies. Going to the place i bought it and see if i can get a refund or a new player.

i have had same locking up freezin problem with my sony bdps300 blu-ray player and its only about a month old.sent e-mail to sony to ask how to proceed and suprise,suprise,no reply.i feel very cheated and let down.my advice dont buy this tripe,steer clear.
mine goes to the movie menu and i will press play it accepts but then shuts off and has to power back up . I tried 10 times . only on blue ray (nims island)
plays regular dvd fine.
Mine freezes up constantly. I have newest firmware. It freezes on Netlix, new, and store rental movies. It really has me mad, as now instead of impressing friends...they just up and leave because they have seen the problem so many times, and it takes so long to completely power down and start over. I hate this player....I will go back to my cheap DVD player....sure wishI kept the box...it is only a few month old!!!
it takes 10 minutes to load to the menu.. on hellboy II ..and then when i press start.. it reboots the player and we have to wait for it to reload. and the cycle repeats. never get to watch the film
I have the same issues....it will take forever to load movie then it will stop and reboot machine...what is up??
The player registers "no signal" after FBI warning and never gets to the movie.
can't get full or wide screen with new onkyo 525 receiver using sony dvd blu-ray player
The player can still play Blu-Ray discs and CDs, but DVDs won't play back and seem to freeze the entire unit.
