Canon Autofocus problem

Hi,
I have a Canon G9, and my autofocus works sometimes good and sometimes a disaster.
I think it need a calibration.
I have to use manual focus to solve it, but not always work because it's not too fine.
Can I do the calibration by myself ?

Thank you
Lalo

SOURCE: My Canon digital rebel will not autofocus correctly.

I had this problem awhile ago - you must have accidently adjusted the focal area - it is sooooo easy to do without realising it. Here is what I was told:
**************************

Most likely, you have changed the AF point, which only takes effect in the creative modes (Manual, Av, Tv, P, etc)

There should be a button on your camera that has a grid like pattern above it, like
-
- - - - -
-

or so. press that, look through the viewfinder, and move the shutter or rear wheel, you should see the different AF points like up in red, and as you turn different ones will light up, and eventually all of them. also, you can look on the screen on top (or back, if its a rebel) and it will show you which ones are selected while in that mode, instead of looking through the viewfinder.

Out of the box, I couldn't get a center focus shot. Out of desperation I reset the camera (push info and magnify buttons at the same time). That solved the problem.

Check your diopter adjustment. It should be a small wheel on the upper right of the viewfinder. It is designed so that people who normally wear eyeglasses can use the viewfinder without their glasses, but it can occasionally get bumped. If the diopter adjustment is way off, it is like looking through someone else's eyeglasses!

Sound like the secondary autofocus mirror may be loose, gently move the main mirror up after removing the lens to have a look. If this is the case the camera needs to be repaired

Why does autofocus keeps moving in and out on some slides

I can think of three possible reasons for the continuous focus adjustments: the autofocus system may have a bind; it might be in need of calibration; or the curvature of the slides keep changing because of the varying heat absorption rate of the transparency.
Unfortunately, aside from making sure that all the slides are in the same orientation as the tray, there isn't much that the average user can do to correct the continuous focus adjustments.

The lens focus ring is set and calibrated by the manufacturer using precision instruments like MTF testing benches and many other specialized tools, thus making it difficult for end users to perform any sort of manual adjustments. I would get in touch with the manufacturer to see if either repair or replacement would be a viable option.

Canon Digital Rebel autofocus problem (EOS 300 and 350)

Hi.

A number of complaints from Digital Rebel EOS owners reported that the auto focus feature suddenly stopped working. In some case the picture was showing a dark shadow on the lower side.

The problem is a factory defect caused by a factory defective autofocus sub mirror. The problem is known to most repairers ( and sadly to users ). Although the defect due to design problem, Canon never acknowledge that this is a factory defect, and never issued a recall and free repair notice for Digital Rebel defective autofocus.

THe repair is done replacing the mirror. The cost ranges between $120 and $180.

As first line of action, check any of the links below, and call Canon. Complain, and see if you can get discounted repair.

If that does not work, the alternatives are using the camera with no AF, or having the camera repaired at own expenses. Often the sub mirror may get even more stuck, and pictures start showing the black shadow from mirror on lower part of the picture.

This is the cause of your troubles:

Here one of several repair websites dealing with the problem. I quote:

"Most autofocus repairs are related to problems with the small mirror under the main mirror (known as the sub-mirror). There is a plastic post that operated this mirror which sometimes breaks. We replace this post with a brass pin so that the problem will not recur. "

Here one of the many forums on the problem. Please read the testimonial from other users, it is quite instructive.

Other forum.

Here replacement pin.

Here how to do the repair.

Good luck.

My canon G9 does not seem to give good focusing results. Pictures seem slightly out of focus specially with flash on Auto

Your autofocus may need to be re calibrated-- this is not something you can do on your own, but it is something that could be done at a local camera repair shop. Take it in and see if they would be able to adjust it or give you an estimate.

Autofocus on my Canon 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 EF IS fails

Hello. First, check the contacts on the lens mount--you're looking for bent pins, oxidized(odd-colored) metal, damaged contact points, etc. The camera must communicate reliably with the internal circuitry of the lens unit. If there is any dirt, moisture, intermittent contact going on, the sensitive focusing electronics will be effectively blinded. If all is fine with the contacts, then the problem lies with the circuits in the lens that provide critical focusing data to the camera. Movement of certain parts causes electrical changes to occur at a calibrated rate--if the camera loses connection, it can't tell if the lens is actually adjusting. You'll have to send the lens in for repair--http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=SupportIndexAct. This address should get you started.--Hope I helped!---Rick

Auto-focus problem

I shoot with a 10D and at first I thought I might have a problem. Now I think I just wasn't using it correctly. I read a lot of posts on dpreview about how to use the autofocus correctly and that has helped me a lot.
