SD memory cards - and how smart are these cameras, really?

Hi! Thanks in advance! And this is more in category of quandry than problem - and I hope with y'alls help to keep it there! OK - have Pentax Optio W10 - it uses 512 SD cards - which are getting harder to find these days... Question is: would it damage the camera to try to have it format, say, a 2 gig SD card?? So far I have a: 1) yes - it will blow up, don't even try it; and a 2) sure - why not ... for a number of reasons, I've not much confidence in either of those assessments... and I don't know how it works well enough myself to really guess. SO - I turn to you. (Could it really blow up??) Thanks again - Jan

You may use any SD card up to 2GB in size. The only way you can damage the camera with a memory card is if you try to put it in wrong and break something inside the slot.

I use 2gb cards in my Optio W10 and format them regularly on my camera every time I am finished transferring the pictures to my hard drive.

Do i need a memory card for a vivitar vivicam 7024?

Hi. Thanks for your question.

Yes you do need memory card for your Vivitar 7024 camera because it's got no internal memory by it's self so you are unable to take picture without one. Camera can take SD or micro SD cards.

I hope that helped. Thank You for using FixYa.

I have the older version (about 18 months old) version of the Kidizoom camera. I have just bought an SD card which is an SDHC. The camera wont recognise it or let me change the default memory store. Help!...

Hi

SD and SDHC are different types of memory card. A camera designed to soley use the older SD type cards will not be able to operate with SDHC. Newer cameras can use both SD and SDHC cards but the chances are the Kidizoom will only work with SD cards.

Hope this helps

Should you use an 8gb sd memory card in a panasonic lumix dmc-fx3 camera ?

Hi,

The manual lists the following SD cards compatible:

4 GB SDHC Memory Card
2 GB SD Memory Card
1 GB SD Memory Card
512 MB SD Memory Card
256 MB SD Memory Card
128 MB SD Memory Card
64 MB SD Memory Card

An 8GB card may or may not work. If you try it, make sure it is an SDHC card. (Note: HC=High Capacity)

Thanks for using Fixya.

Internal memory

Hi there.
Providing you have a SD memory card in the camera and the card is empty you can transfer all the data from internal memory to the SD card using the camera's menu.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa!!

Hi. I own a Canon A530 digital camera. I need to buy anew memory card for it. I would like to know if I could use a 4GB SD card for it? Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, no. If it's a 4GB card, it is an SDHC card, which uses a different protocol than the 'standard' SD card. The maximum capacity of the SD protocol is 2GB, which is what the A530 is compatible with. (The SDHC protocol came out after the A530 was introduced.)

JVC GR-D395u memory card question continued...

A very fair question and my opinion is based on educated guess. so my take is this if the camera is new ( 6mo or newer) it uses the SDHC because the new standard is backwards compatible. also the manual references the high capacity sd cards ( I looked at the PDF online) I can't imagine the camera not using SDHC when it doesn't reference standard sd cards. You still may want to buy your card somewhere that will take it back easily.

Hope this helps and let me know what you decide. good luck

I have Nikon coolpix P50 does it support 8GB for SD card?

The manual only specifies cards up to 4GB in size. I suspect that Nikon, conservative as they are, only listed cards that existed at the time. If you can get access to an 8GB card, go ahead and try it.

You can download a PDF manual from http://support.nikontech.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13948 and/or order a printed one from http://www.nikonmall.com/category/instructionmanuals
