It means the SD memory card has a little switch on the side that is in the "locked" position. Remove card, move switch, re-install, and you should be good to go.

Powershot s3 is memory card locked

Look at your memory card. SD/SDHC cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the metal contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card.

When turned on..It says Card locked! can't take pics and can't erase pics...No where in menu does it say anything about card locked. There is also a "hand symbol" Never seen this before.

It's not the camera, but the memory card. SD cards have a slide switch along one edge. The position farthest from the contacts locks the card, protecting it from writes. The position nearest the contacts unlocks the card. If the switch is already in the proper position, slide it fully the other way and then back again.

I CANT UNLOCK THE MEMORY CARD...SO I CANNOT TAKE PICS....

The SETUP menus should allow you to unlock the card. Alternatively, re-formatting will clear the card and start anew, or you can put a new card in (they are cheap)

Camera Locked

Many times you need to format the memory card in order to use it... have you formatted the memory card? There's a menu on the camera to do this.

If you're using a card like an SD card, there's a very small slide switch that actually locks the card so no one can over write your pics. Find the slide switch and move it the other way, and that should unlock the card. You'll still have to format.
