The picture is perfect when the screen is on, but it goes black very shortly after startup, and sometimes goes back on and off in no apparent pattern. Sometimes I can manipulate it back on for good by turning the system on and off a few times but it is very unreliable. Any clue as to why this occurs and how it may be fixed?? I have a Phillips ambilight 42 plasma (42PF9630A/37) that is 2 years old. It turns to a black screen after about 4 or 5 mins of normal watching. The power light stays green then it tries to turn itself back on several times. The picture is perfect and there seems to be nothing wrong until the black screen.
When the picture goes off do you still hear the sound??
My screen is black, why do I not have a picture?
Answer
Antenna is not hooked up to television.
Problem is caused by television broadcast
Television is in EXT or SIDE mode, and there is no external source provided, so screen mute (black screen) is activated.
If you are using an accessory device (DVD, DVR, or VCR), be sure the device is on and running.
Blank screen when connecting to the accessory (DVD, STB, PC) device via HDMI to HDMI.

Television is probably malfunctioning due to electrostatic discharge.
Try resetting the television by unplugging it from the power outlet for
10 seconds.Make sure that the power cable on the display and
the VGA cable with trailing audio cables are connected correctly (use
the originally supplied VGA cable.) between 'MONITOR' of the TV and
'VGA1' of the display.Make sure that the display is switched on.

The only thing I can suggest outside of taking the television to get repaired is a hail-mary firmware update. To be honest, the firmware update process is fairly complicated and lengthy. You can download the firmware and find instructions for it here.

Look on the right hand side for firmware information.
This TV is likely outside of its 1 year manufacturer's warranty so you would have to pay any and all repairs. Before deciding to do a repair you might try calling Philips. For a while they were offering a service to customers like yourself with out of warranty units. They would offer to sell you a more up to date model at a discount. I'm not sure they still do this but its worth a shot.
Hope that helps!
