    Ben;

    After all of this, I decided to erase all the contents from the hard drive and reinstall the files. Now, I have a working hard drive (again).  I have not have a glitch and hope not to get one. Was this a cure? So far so good... Thanks for your assistance on this matter.

Hi calicali,

Are you using Western Digital's built-in software to try backups, or just dragging or copying/pasting manually?

If you can use more detail I can help you.

    Hi again calicali,

    Next questions - are you using PC or Mac? Also, are you using the firewire (1394) connection or USB 2.0?

    Hi again,

    Okay. You haven't formatted this drive, have you? By default the WD MyBooks are in FAT32 file format. I'm assuming you haven't done so, but I have to ask.

    If not, going back to your original post, you say 'read only.' I'm assuming you received some error message letting you know that, for whatever reason, the drive won't let you copy/move files; if not, perhaps you're just trying to copy/move files and it gives you a different error message. Can you let me know exactly what error message(s) you're getting, or exactly what's happening when you try to do so?

    You can also try running the WDDiagnostics tools on the drive if you like. Run the Extended Test and it may come up with something. I'm curious, first, to see what answers you have for my previous questions.

    Here's a link to the diagnostics tools for the WD Drives.

    Thanks,
    Ben

Death of a drive

That sounds like a head crash. You should take to a service center and get it fixed and/or inspected.
