Doesnt matter if its in japanese.

What you need to do is to open the driver if its in zip or compressed form into a folder on your desktop.

Once you unpaked the driver to this folder: Give the folder a name: My Sound driver for example

Next OPEN CONTROL PANEL then DOUBLE CLICK on DEVICE MANAGER

Find your Sound card in the listing in the Device manager window (Ususally its the driver wth a yellow question mark and stating its a sound card: READ CAREFULLY)

Once you find the sound card listing in device driver, click on the name, click on the button REINSTALL DRIVER (look for it in each tab if its not on the front tab)

A window will open asking you where to get the driver, CLICK on the button labeled USE A DISK or some wording like that:

Another window will open and ask you to navigate to your drive letter.

Write in the drive letter box or press the button BROWSE and navagate to your desktop and DOUBLE CLICK on the folder you just made.

Select the driver that you see come up (hopefully it will show up, if not then you need to find the drivers again on the web).

After you see and select the driver that comes up, CLICK OK and the drive SHOULD install correctly.

Reboot the pc and the sound card should be up and running

that is no problem if you can't tells the full details of you don't have sound, do you have drivers for that laptop?
Or you can find the sound drivers, and what OS is it that you have installed.
Plus what is the brand name...
Please give us the full details of your laptop then we will figure out something.

This is a Japanese model. You would need to visit the NEC Japan website to download the drivers. It originally came with Windows 2000, so I assume that it has been reformatted with XP perhaps and the drivers weren't found.

Assuming you don't speak Japanese, I'll help out here!

There are actually two models that this could be:

VA86J/DF-E
VA86J/DX-E

That says "OS driver" - I'm not sure if it'll work.

If not, the company who support these products don't have drivers for the VA86 but they do for the VA80. You could try those.

If this doesn't work, you have to identify your audio chip and get the drivers from the manufacturer of the chip. The best way to do this is download the trial version of Everest from www.lavalys.com and see if the trial version identifies chipsets. Look for audio. e.g. the VA80 uses ADI's AD1886. In that case you would google AD1886 drivers.

Being one of the NEC techs years ago that repaired NEC laptops in thier 72 hour turn over program.
this guy is gonna be hard to get.
most of the sound drivers for these guys were sound blaster drivers.
see if Sound blaster might have them.
or a PC swap meet.
They are out there. My luck usually is with PC shows.

Yeah the driver is really difficult to find nowaday, i have before a NEC VA10J the audio driver is supported by XP, but no audio!, then i find an appropriate driver for it, its AudioMax.

i have NEC versapro va 86j Win 98 was initially installed in it but when i installed WinXP the sound lost. plz help me out i have no sound driver for this laptop please do it at ur earliest if feasible
