We have 2 Brother printers (mfc-9880 and MFC-8860dn both on a LAN)and have just added a hl-3070cw also on the same LAN. The 2 MFC have always appeared on ''My Network Place'' but the new HL does not and jet it can be accessed OK for printing, is there a reason? NETBIOS is turned on. Running windows xp pro.

error 71 indicates problem with the laser unit motor.. 80% is the motor problem and 20% could be the LVPS board... make sure all the cover and interlock switch are close properly.. as any interlock switch which are not close properly will effect the voltage to the motor..

Probably a broken Hot Roller gear in the fuser. The fuser is the section in the back, that presses the print between a pair of hot rollers to melt the powdered toner into the paper, making the image permanent. That combination of heat and pressure makes the fuser vulnerable to breakage in any laser printer or copier. The HR (hot roller) gear is a ring around one end of the heated roller, and it sometimes breaks apart.
The MFC 9880 isn't listed on Brother's US service website, so I can't tell you whether you need to buy a whole fuser assembly or just that gear.

Yes I did it myself, however I am savvy with most hardware, I wouldnt suggest it for the novice. It cost around $NZ245 for the fusing unit, which from doing a quick search online is about the same in most countries.

Update the firmware and it does support SMTP-AUTH
