Can't transfer images onto computer from my A580 powershot
I've plugged the camera into the pc ready to download pictures, have the view mode on the camera not the taking picture mode, it used to show on the display that it was coinnecting to pc and transferring images. Now it just shows the stored pictures on the camera. How can I transfer them onto my pc?

First of all, if you've edited the pictures in any way (opening a picture in a photo editing program and then saving it without making any changes counts as editing) then the camera most likely won't be able to display the images.
You can transfer files (not just pictures) to the memory card using a card reader. Plug the card into the reader and it will appear to your computer as another hard drive. Simply drag-n-drop files to it the same way you copy other files on your computer.
Consider NOT connecting your camera to your computer.
The best way to download pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB or FireWire). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.
Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use Canon ZoomBrowser or any other photo cataloging program.

Supported windows Operating system
Windows 98 Second edition(SE) Windows Me Windows 2000 Service pack 4 Windows XP SP 1 and SP 2
Canon PowerShot A430 has no update about the new driver software for windows 7
Try doing this direct transfer in your computer
1. Connect the camera to your computer using the supplied USB cable of your camera.
2. Set the mode dial to (playback) and turn on the power. The camera and computer will be able to communicate.
3. If there is no pop up window that has Canon CameraWindow, Click the [Start] menu and select [all Programs] or [Programs]. followed by [Canon Utilities], [Camera Window], [PowerShot-IXY-IXUS-DV 6] and [CameraWindow]
4. Download the images. * Download the images using the camera or the computer. * By default, the downloaded images are saved into the [My Pictures] folder.
** If the above process does not work you can just use the memory card of your camera and connect that on your laptop. (some laptop has built in card reader) The memory card works like a flash drive and you can just transfer files like transferring from one folder to another.** Issue on the operating system compatibility.
You don't really need any additional software. Despite what I said first... There are also plenty of photo catalog software packages out there, some free, some not, that can transfer and catalog your pictures so you can quickly find pictures from Susie's birthday party, for example. Just do a google search for "photo catalog software".
Just figured this one out. Man, they don't make it easy. I'm borrowing my roommate's PowerShot A510 and since it has a USB port going out, I'd assume I could simply connect the camera to my PC and access my images directly. Almost every other camera I've seen will register itself to Windows as a straight USB connection (prompting the Windows screen asking how you want to open the connection - 'open folder' etc). This one just sits dead quiet about things :)
If you've just bought this camera at a garage sale or are borrowing it or for whatever other reason do not have the "bundled" software and driver CD or have the camera's serial number, do not bother trying to find windows drivers or try to obtain any software from Canon. You won't get very far.
FINALLY found the solution in the User's Manual (which was free thank God). You can download the manual here: http://usa.canon.com/cusa/support/consumer/digital_cameras/powershot_a_series/powershot_a510#BrochuresAndManuals (Select your operating system and download the "PowerShot A520/A510 Camera User Guide". File name is PSA520510CUG-EN.pdf)
In the User Guide, page 107 (I'll paraphrase): 1. Put camera in Play mode (the switch on the back (green arrow in green box) 2. Press Menu button (center one of the three along the bottom of the view screen) 3. In the 1st menu option (Play Menu, again green arrow in box highlighted), use the wheel button to scroll down to highlight "Transfer Order". Press Set (center of wheel). 4. You should now see "Transfer Order (DPOF) at the top of the screen and "Qty. of images 0". 5. Below "Qty of images 0" you'll see "Order", "Mark All", and "Reset". Order lets you select individual images; Mark All marks all current images for transfer; and Reset is reset. Press Set to choose.
Note: pressing the Menu button while selecting images brings you back to this main screen. If you are already at this main screen and you aren't ready to do your transfer yet, DON'T press the Menu button from this screen as it will initiate the transfer to your computer. Not a horrible thing, but might cause a mini freak-out.
7. Once you're selected the images you want to transfer, from the main Transfer Order window (now showing "Qty. of images" with a count of the images you selected), press the Menu button.
8. You'll see a white progress bar at the bottom of the screen. Don't worry! it's not deleting files or something bad.. (my first thoughts :) .. 9. Go to your PC and Voila! the Windows AutoPlay screen is now active! 10. Proceed with normal Windows USB operations (transferring at least, I didn't try any deletion).
I hope this helps somebody else out there who spent the last 3 hours trying to dig through internet hell to get this to work.
Atm, this is as much as I know so I probably don't have any good answers for any questions. Sorry :))
If the pictures look normal when viewing them on the camera but have this color distortion afer downloading them to the computer it sounds like they are getting corrupted during the transfer. Try a different USB cable if you can or try downloading them to a different computer to see if the problem persists and if the same images are displaying the same problems.
Go with the obvious solution. The camera only lets the computer read the card and delete pictures. It does not let you write to the card.
Be aware that if you've edited the photos in any way (opening a photo in a photo editor and then saving it without making any changes counts as editing) then the camera may not display the picture.
your best bet is to resize the images. you can easly resize using windows or easier using the camera software, under zoombrowser go to internet then email emages, follow that then save the images to your computer then try those images. If could be that the ones that wouldn't transfer they could have been edited, if the DPI setting of the image has been changes or set in anyway that could be makign the images over 27"
On the camera you can easily change the resolution of fuure images y pressing func/set button and scrolling down to the bottom where you have L , M1 M@ M# S, try choosing S if your not planning on printing images other than on your report
I can't help with the camera, but to view the pictures on the computer, remove the card from the battery compartment and put it in a card reader connected to your computer.
