Mine started doing the same thing today. I am on vacation and very upset that I can't continue to take pictures.

Yes, we are having the same exact problem. We have taken no steps at this time to solve the problem.

My Sony Cybershot DSC-W80 has been treated very well. No problems. Took pics on Easter and the next day....lens extended/retracted several times and then the display went black and said "turn camera on and off again". So I did and nothing changed. Banged it on my palm and that worked once but never again. I don't see any uneven gaps around the lens. I took the battery out and reset as well, as suggested on Sony website. No luck. Suggestions?

I have the same problem. The battery is fully charged and there's plenty of space on my 2GB memory stick, but it just keeps doing it when I try to take pictures. Any luck on an answer as to why it is doing this or how it can be fixed?

  • nidaky Apr 10, 2008

Turn power on and off. Lens will extend and retract, then ask me to turn off the camera. My camera was only 87 days old, but Sony would not honor the warranty. They said it was impact damage. They wanted me to pay $187 to fix, but the camera only cost $149. I asked for the camera to be sent back to me. Once I received my camera, I fixed it by shaking it gently. The lens re-engaged and the camera now works.

Same problem upon turning the camera on and powering up, the lens goes in and out 3 times and then promts to shut the power down and on again. It does not correct the problem by doing this.

I HAVE DCS-W70 WITH SAME PROBLEM AS WELL.WHEN YOU TURNED ITON IT SAY'S " TURN THE THE POWER OFF AND ON AGAIN" AND TRIED IT SEVERAL TIMES AND ITS WORK..AS WELL THE LENS KEPT LOCKED AND IT WONT COME BAK WHEN TURNED IT OFF..PLS HELP

  • DSCW90 Apr 17, 2008

Getting the same error message, "turn the power off and on again". I bought the DSC-W90 on December 24th, 2007. I suspect the same issue. It is under warranty so I am going to try to send it back to the manufacturer as a first step resolution. I would take it apart but feel tampering with it prior to sending it back to the manufacturer would not be wise.

    Will keep you posted!

  • rosaids dominguez Apr 25, 2008

When turning on the camera, it tries to open the shutters on the lens 3 times, only partially opening and closing, then says "access, turn power on and off again". It also sounds like it may have something loose inside, as it rattles.

  • hollie98663 May 08, 2008

I have purched 2 cybershots and both have had issues with the lens not wanting to retract. saying to turn off power then turn back on? is this not a good camera? It's to bad because I really like them!

I had the same problem with my sony DSC-W80, and it happens to be the lens as you said. I've tried with twisting the lens a bit while i was turning the camera on, and it worked just find!!! The problem was that I went to the beach and some sand get in it, so I took them out just by zooming in and out and blowing a bit while doing it, and they suddenly went off.
Thanks to you all! You've just saved me $150!

  • Anonymous Mar 16, 2009

I had this problem too. All the sudden it told me to turn the power off and on again after working perfectly fine. I went to where I bought it and he reccomended I get a new battery or buy a whole new camera? After hearing this I am going to try turning the lense or shaking it, as it may have been sand from my trip. Thanks for your comments! I really like this camera and didn't want to have to buy a new one.

AMAZING!!! JUST WORKED FINE!! THAT SOUNDED CRAZY!

So 2 weeks ago my Sony DSC-W80 stopped working. Our friends dog ran into the camera (in my girlfriends hand) full speed. It started opening and closing a few times, and then giving the "turn the camera off and back on" message. I read about tapping around the lens, etc. None of this worked.

I took off the camera body and carefully examined the interior of the camera. Turning in on and watching closely, I discovered the problem. Looking at the camera from the front, I saw a slider on the top right side of the lens that appeared to be jammed. I then saw a spring that was attached to the slider and free on the other end. Apparently when the dog rammed the camera, the other mount for the spring broke off (they are very fragile). The purpose of the slider is to adjust the viewfinder based on the zoom range of the lens. I simply removed the slider which had jammed when the spring came loose. Camera works flawlessly now. The only issue is that the viewfinder doesn't zoom, but who uses the viewfinder anymore anyway? Oh, and I have a screw leftover. What project isn't complete without having extra parts when you are done?

Hope this can help someone else!

I read some of the above reccommendations and instead of hitting or shaking I grabbed the lens and manipulated it firmly like I was trying to twist it in and out as I powered on and off, in a few seconds it started working again.

I also put a bit of wd-40 on a q-tip and rubbed it around the lens, when it was extended. This seems to have solved my problem.

Knocking the camera sounds like it works but may create another problem. I have had this problem with p-100 , p-200 and now the w50, I have found a small drop, of wd40 placed on both sides ,two opposing sides,of the lens ring where it extends from the body will work also. Don't spray, its a bit too hard to control amount deposited. Use a toothpick or a stick to dip and then drop the oil.

This happened to me when I was on a cruise last November. After I hit the camera, it worked, but eventually it happened again. When I hit it again, it didn't work. I ended up returning it.

Sony DSC-W80 Problems - Camera not used much

FROM WHAT I CAN FIND ON THE SONY WEBSITE AND OTHER SITES, THIS MODEL HAS MANY STRANGE PROBLEMS AND MANY ERROR CODES. YOU MIGHT TRY THE " RESET " THEY LIST TO REMOVE THE BATTERY, HIT THE ON SWITCH FOR 5-10 SECONDS THEN REINSTALL THE BATTERY AND POWER UP THE CAMERA AGAIN AND SEE IF THIS CLEARS THE ERROR. YOU HAVE TO ADMIT THAT YOUR CAMERA HAS DONE SOME VERY INTERESTING THINGS IN THE PAST. I WOULD HAVE SENT IT IN FOR SERVICE WHILE IT WAS UNDER WARRANTY. IT IS SHOWING SOME SIGNS OF REAL PROBLEMS AND IT MAY HAVE TO BE SENT IN FOR SERVICE. BUT, PLEASE TRY THE RESET TO SEE IF THIS WILL WORK. I HOPE IT WILL SOLVE THE PROBLEM. PLEASE REPLY TO:ARCLIGHT1217

DSC W80.

Whenever you switch on the camera the lense comes out to a certain places, stops and the camera is initialized to take the picture. In some cases when there is a friction in the movement of the lense, it does not comes out fully up to the proper position. so the camera mechanism draws it back and again pushes it out. this happens 3-4 times and if still the lense does not reaches its position it displays "turn the power off and on again" and the problem continues.

Your camera needs a repair of the lense assembly.
