Is there a box from the cable company? If so, you will need to tune the TV to the channel that the box outputs it's signal on. Usually it's either channel 3 or 4. Whether you have a cable box or not, make sure in the set-up menu for the TV, that you have selected "cable" not "air" as your signal source. Write if you need anymore assistance.
I also forgot to mention that the output from the cable box needs to be connected to the input of the VCR & then the output from the VCR needs to be connected to the coax connector on the TV. As an aside, this set-up will not provide the best picture quality for you. Using the coax connections means that you are passing the signal thru 2 tuners, the VCR & the TV. Anytime you do that it decreases the picture quality. If you are interested in some other connection options, write & let me know.

I do have cable service. I connected the cable TV wire into the back of the DVD/vcr player and then ran the cable from the player into the TV. This is the layout I used for all of the other televisions we have, but this is the first flat screen that we have. Any suggestions you can provide will be greatly appreciated so I can get my wife off my back.

A couple of questions. How exactly did you connect the vcr to the tv? Do you have cable service & did you connect the coax from the cable service to the input connection on the vcr & the vcr output to the tv? Get back to me & depending upon how you answer those questions will determine where we go from here, OK?
