Oven appears to start heating, takes forever to preheat, sometimes does not heat, never gets beyond preheat.
Broiler works fine.
Stove top works fine.
Last night I started with oven and it did not reach preheat temps.
I switched to broiler and it heated up. I switched back to oven and it worked.

This is what I would do: I would unplug the range and connect my test cord to your range cord. I use an ammeter along with my test cord to read the amp draw of the bake ignitor. If it cannot get above 3.5 amps I know the ignitor is bad or weak. Since the oven is working that means there is a good circuit. In order for the safety bi-metal to open the amp draw must reach 3.5 amps or better. So to me I am thinking bad ignitor. To get to it I remove the door oven racks and bottom, I then remove the flame spreader and unplug the quick connect to the ignitor. I remove the burner and ignitor and replace the ignitor on a work bench. I am too old to be bending over and trying to do any parts replacement inside an oven. LOL. I have a training film which shows how the silicone carbide ignitor works HERE. Post a model number and I may have a service manual, do not forget to rate the answer.

    Hello Mobilian
I am having the identical issue with a Kenmore gas oven. Thanks so much for the great video and information. Checked the igniter current draw only 2.6 amps. Had the oven bottom out in 2 minutes and there it is. Life's much easier with a little info...

Hey- Gas ovens have burner and broil ignitors that may still function enough to ignite, but not enough to allow gas valve to fully open. Flames appear but do not have full flow of gas to reach full temp rise. Some broil/burner ignitors are the same and interchangeable, but are carbon ceramic elements and are very brittle- easily breakable! Most likely culprit is faulty oven burner ignitor available for 50-100$ at local app parts. Hope this helps- Thanks- ED

We have a 30 in prostyle electric double wall oven - the oven takes forever to preheat and the doors do not seal tightly when they are closed.

Hello- Many ovens use spring-loaded hinges to carry the weight of the door. Over time, these springs weaken or the hinge gets bent just enough to not fully close door. The door gasket can also become flat and stiff, compounding problem. Any small gap releases heated air, and oven will not heat up properly. Replacing the door springs should solve problem.- Thanks -Ed

Oven sometimes doesn't heat up. Sometimes heats up to desired temp, then quits working. Sometimes doesn't even heat up at all. When preheated light comes on, thermometer in oven usually says about 100...

This sounds like a weak igniter, it would have to be a gas oven and the symtoms usually are: takes longer than normal to ignite the burner, may or may not smell gas in the oven, does not maintain set temperature, eventually won't heat at all. On gas ovens, a glo igniter is like a light bulb, the more you cook, the faster it wears out. Bottom line, needs to be replaced. Good luck.

I have Jen Air expressions built in oven. It takes forever for the oven to preheat. What could be the problem? It is about 13 years old.

Both the broil and the bake heating elements are on during preheat. I would take a look as it appears that your broil element needs to be replaced.

Ovens won't heat up beyond 250 degrees.

if you cant program it for more than the 270 you may have changed it from farienhiet ( bad spelling) to celcius. pushing and holding broil may switch it back.
