Sewing machine 'popped', and needle is hitting back left side of the base plate. Also turning dial to switch between positions 2 & 3, the needle doesn't move left to right. Is this a linkage problem ?

Is your needle position selector stuck? Try moving the dial back and forth a few times. Have your oiled your machine lately? You manual is available on Singerco.com and is free to download. Good luck

First, check the position of your needle.Machines with zigzag capability allow you to adjust the position of your needle left, right,or center. If your needle is not in the correct position, it may be hitting your needle plate. If that doesn't work,change your needle plate.
If you've been using a straight stitch needle plate (a plate with a small hole, often used for sewing fine, delicate fabrics), switch to a needle plate with a wider hole.

You may have the stitch setting on the left/right(depends which side it hits) setting, or the needle is un-noticeably bent. Depending on where the needle hits, if you are in zig-zag mode and it is hitting the base plate(wide slotted base plate req'd) the machine may need re-setting of the needle stops(if fitted). This is uncommon so its more likely to be a bent needle.

* When you insert your new needle, make sure it’s positioned correctly (usually with the flat side away from the bobbin, but check your manual), make sure that it goes all the way into the holder, and that the screw is securely tightened.

If there doesn’t seem to be a problem with your needle, try the following:

* Check your pressure foot
Make sure it’s attached securely.

* Change your pressure foot
Your pressure foot may be bent, causing your needle to hit it.

* Don’t sew over pins
A needle that hits a pin can break. Always remove the pins from your fabric before they reach your needle.

* Don’t pull your fabric as you sew
You could be bending your needle back, causing it to hit your needle plate instead of going into the hole. Just guide your fabric, letting it feed on its own.

* Check your needle plate
Make sure it's securely in position.

* Change your needle plate
If you’ve been using a straight stitch needle plate (a plate with a small hole, often used for sewing fine, delicate fabrics, switch to a needle plate with a wider hole.

The first thing to observe is if the feed teeth are coming up above the needle plate. Remove the presser foot and unthread the needle, then rotate the handwheel (always towards you, never away from you) and check to see if the teeth come above the plate. The button next to the on and off switch drops the feed teeth, so make sure it is in the up position. Pushing on it when its down makes it pop up and then after the machine makes one revolution the feed teeth pop up for normal sewing. Also look on the left side of the machine and you'll notice a dial, that dial should be on 6 for normal sewing. If everything I've covered so far is correct, the dial is on 6, the teeth do come up above the needle plate and your plate is correctly on the machine and you still don't have feeding it's more than likely a computer problem and a service to your tech is in order.

* Change your bobbin. There could be a nick along the edge of your bobbin spool that’s catching your thread as you sew.

Also, before you start to sew a seam, hold the upper and bobbin thread tails. Hold them back
and out of the way as you sew your first couple of stitches. This will keep them from getting
caught in your machine.

Here's what the manual says:

Before sewing, fit the button-hold foot to the machine (long white plastic thing with red, ruler like markings).

Select the pattern selector dial that is solid green on the left hand side. Set the dial to "1" position. Sew the left side and raise the needle.

Select the pattern selector dial that is solid green on the top and bottom. Set the dial to "2" position. Sew 5-6 stitches and raise the needle.

Select the pattern selector dial that is solid green on the right hand side. Set the dial to "3" position. Sew the right side. Raise the needle.

Select the pattern selector dial that is solid green on the top and bottom. Set the dial to "4" position. Sew 5-6 stitches and raise the needle.

AT THIS POINT THE FEED DOGS SHOULD BE JUST AT OR JUST UNDER PLATE. IF SO NEEDLE BAR IS, IN CORRECT POSITION,AND TIMING WILL BE SET AT THE HOOK.
TO SET TIME REMOVE NEEDLE PLATE TURN HAND WHEEL SO NEEDLE IS IN LOWEST POSITION. USING A SMALL RULE RAISE NEEDLE BAR 3/32 OF AN INCH ( OR 3 MM FOR A METRIC RULE) .HOOK POINT SHOULD BE IN CENTER OF NEEDLES WIDTH. LOOSEN THE 2 SHAFT SCREWS
SLIGHTLY,TURN HOOK TIL CENTER OF NEEDLE. TIGHTEN SCREWS. IF NEEDLE BAR IS OUT OF TIME. BRING HOOK TO CENTER OF NEEDLE AND LOOSEN SCREW IN LEFT COVER. RAISE OR LOWER NEEDLE BAR TO SET 3/32OF AN INCH. THE 3/32 MUST BE VERY VERY CLOSE.
